I have recently applied for a working holiday visa for australia and am due to set off in July of this year. I am a 25 year old teacher at a primary school in Wales in my third year of teaching and have requested a one year leave of absence from the school but they have turned me down. Im really disappointed as I really have my heart set on going and have even booked my flight. I have been told that if I want to go I will have to hand in my notice which is a big risk although I do not have any responsibilities ie a house kids etc. I would quite like to teach in oz and i thought maybe the working holiday would give me the chance to see if i like it there.
Im sure im not the first person to find themselves in this position but im worried that if i do not go i may regret it for the rest of my life????
Thanks,
Joey09

Well Joey09 - it may seem like a big risk to you.

When I moved to Australia, I had just been made redundant and my (now) wife had already set up home here for us in Brisbane. There was little risk for me.

Yet others uproot their entire families and resign from jobs, to move over here and look for an entire new lifestyle, with hardly any $$$ to their name. That's real risk.

At 25 you can resign from your position, travel to Oz, spend some time getting new experiences, and then if you decide to return to the UK you could take up an even better position elsewhere.

As you have already said, you do not have a house & kids so you have few responsibilities. I think that if your current employer really, really valued you, then they would respect your request for a year out. They are basically saying to you that they would rather you leave for good, than leave for a year and come back. I think that you deserve to work for an employer who is a little more modern in their way of thinking.

The only reason you haven't handed in the resignation is because you are bit nervous. Which is understandable. You just need a bit of a kick to get you going that's all.

Question - can you actually work as a teacher on a WHV, I know a few people on this site have discussed how difficult it was to even get some casual hours as a teacher once they have all their certification process passed. I think we need a teacher already in Aus to give their experience to this response as well.

So if there was no teaching opportunities would you still be prepared to give Aus a go if having to work in Bars and Cafes and rural land jobs?

Resign and go through all the procedures (ie don't just walk out).
Come to Oz and have the time of your life.
Enjoy not having responsibilities (mortgage, partner, kids etc) while you can!
Bear in mind that in the vast majority of cases being in Aus on a WHV is totally different to actually living here long-term....but don't worry about that too much, just come here and enjoy the backpacker routine.

Hi, Joey09.

If you've not already read the threads on the teaching section on BE, then I'd recommend you do that. People have posted about teaching on WHV so you can contact them as they have first hand experience.

It maybe worth applying for a perm visa as currently, Primary teaching is not on the CSL or the MODL although this can always change. This means that applications could take some time to clear and you may want consider how you'd feel if after a year, you think yes it's for me but have longer to wait to come back.

Good luck,
Cooler

Did you read the bit about making sure you are qualified to teach in oz?

Goodluck!

Re: What would you do?

I had the same quandry as you when I was 30 (some years ago!) I also asked for unpaid leave and was refused (I just wanted the safety net). I went away for a planned 10 months travelling round the world and went home nearly three years later. Best thing I ever did. Didn't go back to job - although was invited to and trained to do something else.
I was a bit older than the average backpacker - it happens to all of us at different times. DO IT. It will be one of the best times of your life.

Re: What would you do?

You don't have to stick to your profession...your teaching career will always be there for you to pick up again. I actually chose jobs that I wouldn't have done at home (it was such a novelty going to work in shorts & t shirts!). I spent most of my time in Oz, travelling right round the country and working in NSW, Queensland and Western Australia.
