Hi,

Today my friend told me that, i cant take grocery items like indian pulses, masala etc. He also told me that i cant take indian snacks in loose packing (home made and without company printed packing). I just want to confirm that, is he correct? He also gave me a website address for check but i forgot. Please give me any website to check what i can take and what cant?

Thanks
Nitu

Lets keep this simple... if you can eat it or plant it, DON'T bring it. It will be more trouble than its worth.

Yes, you will be obliged to declare anything that goes in your mouth. AQIS deems anything you eat, whether you consider it food or not, to be food. Most things are ok, but anything with seeds, nuts or animal products of any kind will be confiscated and destroyed. That includes most spices (since they are usually made with seeds). You really are better to buy your things over here. Albany isn't too far from Perth that you couldn't come up once every couple of months to stock up on your spices and other supplies.

Dorothy, I'm off to New Zealand on 4 Dec for a holi and to visit family (flying from the UK), Mom has wrapped up some Ferra Rocher chocs for my christmas present (i can tell by the shape!) and they have hazelnuts in them - will these get confiscated? and i guess i have to declare them?

Am i better posting this on an NZ thread?

Thanks.

Sure is. Most areas have an english shop not too far away, there are lots of us over here so plenty of customers.

Taking things out is much easier. I'm not sure what NZ is like for customs, but Australia is extremely strict about anything that is made from nuts or seeds.

My kids asked me to bring a treat back from Canada for them that they can't get here but I've had to tell them no, since it's nut based.

Long time ago but when I visited NZ they were every bit as bad (good?) about confiscating as Oz.

Dear All,

Thanks a lot for your valuable inputs :thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup: . I have finally decided i will not bring any food or snacks like things which may be not allowed and subject to be fined.

dorothy, thanks a lot once again.

hoofie thanks dear  :p but it was not my actual meaning of entertainment, i was looking for some festival like, amusement parks, gardens etc. type entertainment.

dear noggin, i wanted to bring that because i can eat that as breakfast and can save initial expenses otherwise its ok i can get good breakfast in OZ too but i have to pay for that nothing else.

dear Bubsblooms, no not i am not bringing any furniture.

Thanks,
Nitu

So many times you see on Border Security people saying "it's not food it's only a snack, or it's only candy" Well, sorry Chumley, but if it goes in your gob it's food. (Well in my household anyway)

I know, that's why I had to clarify that in my house only food goes in there.

There is also the very real possibility of a fine, depending on what you bring and whether customs feel you were trying to hide it.
