I'd be interested in this too!! Have searched and can only seem to find threads on how many suitcases, weight allowed etc , NOT what you put in them besides the usual clothes, cosmetics and half a ton of Cadbury's chocolate !!!!!

Definitely bring
a UK extension lead or 2 - saves changing loads of plugs on arrival just change the one one the extension lead and then plug your uk stuff in
A few tools for changing plugs etc - Hubby was lost without anything like that at first.

Re: What to take ???
i would advise to bring everything, what you dont need you can do a garage sale and sell it on (people still pay good money for 2nd hand).
we gave loads away to people furniture which i though was no good. you will be surprise how much renewing everything costs and will soon eat into any money you have.
thats my opinion anyway!!!! you dont have to take it.

Re: What to take ???
OK, here's my list (blatantly cut and paste from a thread from moons ago).
Things that we've found useful to have (or we wish we'd brought) in the first few weeks:
Laptop
MP3 players
Camera
Binoculars
Download leads for camera, MP3 etc
Travel adaptors (although these can be bought over here)
Radio alarm clock (radio being an important word there!)
Hairdryer
Mobile phone charger (assuming you're bringing the phone!)
Air mattress and pump
Blanket
Sheet
Pillows and covers
Dressing gown
Towels
Travel washing line (was a God send, as not all of my stuff can be tumble dried)
Swiss army knife (an excellent leaving gift from Mr GG's place of work. So far the corkscrew, scissor and screwdriver attachments have come in handy. But mainly the corkscrew!)
Some personal odds and sods (books, a few photos, leaving cards - just to make it a little more homely)
Interview gear - suit and shoes
Exercise gear, including trainers
Stationery - pens, envelopes, writing paper
Rucksack
Umberella
Things we've ended up buying, as we planned to do, that have been essential/really useful so far are:
TV
Fridge
Basic kitchen ware (see list below)
Camping chairs (instead of a settee, whilst we wait for our shipment - then we can use them in future too)
Street directory of Sydney (Useful when you're finding somewhere to rent!)
Kitchen ware we've bought:
Tea towels
Oven gloves
Trays
Glasses
Mugs
Cutlery
Plates
Bowls
Wooden cooking utensils
Pans
Colander
Tupperware
Knives
Chopping boards
Tin opener
Cheese grater
Kitchen scissors
Baking tray
Casserole/roasting dish
We shipped everything and lived a very stripped down existence for a few weeks while waiting for everything to arrive.

Now what do you think is the safest way to get some large treasured framed photos over there? Carry them on, ship them or courier them?

Re: What to take ???
We took lots of stuff like that (the photo frames) in our luggage (we flew vis the US so had something like 64 kg luggage allowance each).
An aside on important paperwork: we scanned loads of stuff and uploaded it to Lycos email accounts we'd set up before leaving (enabling us to keep in touch with friends and family en route). Lycos give you tons of free storage space, so it was a useful back up in case anything went missing or got lost along the way. I expect there are loads of free email companies that do something similar.

Re: What to take ???
Dont forget documents: birth certificates, driving licences, copies of your resume and any qualification certificates/paperwork, confirmation of your no claims bonus from current insurers - basically any paperwork you think you may need in the first few weeks pack in your hand luggage (I didnt trust any of it to a suitcase!)
I also scanned it in and copied it all to CD and put that in another hand luggage bag just in case (not that I'm paranoid!)
Definitely some sort of plug adaptor, makes life much easier if you've got UK appliances.
