Unfortunately over the past few years there have been a number of cases (in different states) where VOLUNTEER firies have been charged and convicted with arson.

I don't think by this you are saying all (or even most) firies start fires as I believe you said some
But from what I remember as a kid in the news it was reported they were mainly kids and people who
1. Threw cigarettes out of car windows
2. Left glass bottles etc around
3. Didn't put out their bbq's or camp fires

Unfortunately some of them join as volunteer firies and get bored. To prove their new-found skills they start a fire so they can put it out.
Some volunteers I have had to work with were a few diamonds short of a tiara. Often well-meaning but a bit dillusional.
thank goodness they cant start cyclones or floods.

I'm not particularly offended by the accusation that vols can be arsonists. It's happened. Some paedophiles were school teachers.. I would be more interested in any profiling or behavoural traits that might indicate it - Renth - do you just ensure that blokes are reasonably mature and stable?

I'm glad you can't start any cyclones or floods.

Having said that, most wasters and nutters don't last long because it's such hard work, as you know. For every 20 blokes/women that turn up to volunteer only 1 is still in the brigade a year later.
My brigade has extremely high standards, we may be volunteers but we are not amateurs.

Do they have volunteers for other tasks? I would be very suprised if my husband or I would make the grade
but we would like to volunteer for something (we will be going to Adelaide/SA not WA but I just am asking generally)

If it wasn't for volunteerism Australia could not function.
