FWIW, here's my summary as a very frequent flier. These are the airlines I've flown regularly.

1. QANTAS. Usually pretty good. Comfort and amenity will depend on the aircraft, and that depends on where you're flying to/from. Business class is always good. QANTAS are undergoing a fleet upgrade/renewal program so seats and inflight entertainment are improving. Crew are variable from grumpy to excellent. Expect some English (and Thai if you're on QF1/QF2) cabin crew when flying to/from London in the near future. As an Aussie, I find that disappointing but that's life in this free market world. Online booking is good. Business class lounges are very nice.

I have to comment that of course when you fly business class om majority of airlines the service is good - and when you get up to first class you are like the 'king and queen' - quite pathetic how you are treated when you have a bit of extra cash to throw around. I have flown alot in Africa and the rest of the world - and I have found the smaller airlines to provide a better service. I have flown QANTAS (sp!!) several times and the most recent have to say the services was S@$% - I had pre-booked seats (flying with a child) when I booked in the seats were no longer available and they booked me on the one side of the ilse and my 4 yr old daughter on the other - I had also organised a childs meal which they had not included - the overall service was also S$%^, and on top of that we were squashed in like sardines - as I say if I had a choice would not fly them...

Not pathetic really, you should expect to be treated like a king considering the amount of money you pay for first class seats.

So don't :p Pre-booking seats is fraught with danger on ALL airlines in my experience. Best to check in early and work on the first come first served principle. All the exit row seats will be gone (usually occupied by some short arse/kid who doesn't need them !!!!) but you will usually be able to get a seat combination that works for you.

Like I said, you get good and bad on ALL of them. I've had bad QANTAS flights too, but all in all I've found them to be on a par with everyone else.

Cabin Crew are humans too, they have bad days (especially since their jobs are now being sent overseas). If you bitch and moan, expect surly service. If you're nice to the crew, they're usually nice back!!

Something to consider... Air travel these days is very much like catching a bus. Gone are the days where flying was an exotic and prestigious thing to do. Why do people get so emotional about it? There's something about flying that brings out the worst in people, maybe its being crammed into an aluminium tube for 14 hours with total strangers :D I know if I had to serve passengers in economy class cabins for a living, I'd have a LOT of bad days :scared:
