Default What happens to passports?.......

I'm here on a 457 visa, but am applying for PR Skilled Independant 136.

What is the protacol re: going offshore, and what happens to passport? How do I get visa put in?
And how much notice do DIMIA give you to get time off work etc? Also how long do you need to be out of Australia?

As a nurse - I am also wondering how long it will take - been told by DIMIA that I don't need more meds or police check as within date, and that it will take about 12 weeks - I have my assessment back already (took less than a week!!). How likely is that?
Sorry for al the questions, but I haven't got a clue!
