I think 'Britain' actually means the geographical island of Great Britain , whereas what we think of as 'British' is the 'United Kingdom' as in the union of the Protestant crowns of Scotland and England. Therfore, it's basis is very much with the Royal Family and religion, hence why in some parts of 'Britain' (most obviously Northern Ireland and West of Scotland), 'British' and the Union Flag are somewhat controversial.
