Question What To Do When It Rains In Melbourne

One of the main reasons for us emigrating is for a better climate/outdoor living. We've chosen Melbourne (no choice actually we're STNI). Even though we know it gets wet there it's still miles better than here.

Anyway, hubby asked me a question last night I couldn't answer so I wondered if any of you could.....

What do you do in Melbourne when it rains? I'm assuming there's a lot of indoor stuff on offer but what?

cheers

There were plenty of people with small children in the casino - lots of places to eat in there.

The big sports centre near Albert Park had a lot of things to do.

There is a pretty good book with just about everything you can think of to do in and around Melbourne. It is called '200km Around Melbourne' (Gregory's Touring & Recreational Guides S.) by Alison Caddick, Kellie Firth.
I thought 200 kms was a long way, but in Oz it is the sort of distance some people go to get to the local shop. I would give you some ideas from it for wet days, but it is somewhere on the high seas with the rest of our stuff.

There are lots of indoor playcentre where we normally head if it's raining with our two chilren 3 1/2 and 22 mths it costs $10 for both of them and I can get a coffee while they play. The one we go to alot if called Playdays and you can find them all over Melbourne it depends what age the children are? We also go to the aquarium where we have membership for the year which cost about $70 for the year for the four of us.

We moved to Queensland - that is what we did

Born in Melbourne, I needed to move to the warn because I was having problems with poor circulation and always cold.

We often talk abut going back but as one daughter trains for tennis 3 times a week and we love the beach and using our tinnie, Melbourne does not allow us to do that ALL YEAR round!

In Melbourne, when winter sets in, you stay inside!

You also have the museum and the Science Works. You can purchase yearly family tickets for these at a very minimal cost.

There are also plenty of swimming pools, ten pin bowling, cinema's and my kids love roller skating.

I have found that things aren't like the UK and the rain doesn't tend to last all day and for days on end. There are always sections of the day to get outside and play. Also a lot of the rain comes at night! In the winter if you can afford it head to the slopes where the rain becomes the fun stuff

I have found that at times I look forward to wet days so that I don't feel so guilty about going shopping... The kids love this here as it often means food hall lunch

Good tip, I'll get onto Amazon and look for it.

Wow, the Aquarium is cheap. Your kids are exactly the same age as mine so that's great information for me, thanks.

Yes, unfortunately, our only option for getting a visa is STNI with Vic so it's a couple of winters in Oz for us. We suspect that'll suit us fine (we love the change of seasons).

Thanks for those tips. And I know what you mean about the shopping thing. I feel like such a bad mother when I take my two shopping and they could have been outdoors. Just goes to show every cloud does indeed have a silver lining

I sometimes joke and say that Melly is like the UK in winter, or when it rains, but I don't think it has ever been overcast for more than a week. One way of looking at it is that autumn, spring and summer are 'better' than the Uk, and it never actually really ever freezes; we had 3 lowest temp nights of 3 degrees all winter, a few of 5, most are 7-10 plus. The day time temps are teens all winter really.

We got a week of 20ish and sun in the UK equivalent of Feb, and we've had 24 in the equivalent of March. We have copped it the 2nd week and third week of September though but it is improving again.
