what to do with my dog
just had a call from my mother in law
after a weeks trial with my baby, oscar the boxer dog shes decided she cant give him a home he had a couple of 'accidents' they are an elderly couple so i cant blame them.
what a dilemma. The vet thinks he will be to stressed on the journey if we take him with us, but no one would want to take an old dog on, and i couldnt live with having him put down for convenience.
we leave at the end of march..i dont want to go now

he's 10. some days he thinks he's a puppy, he would love the beach.
he's fainted a couple of times with stress at the vets...he's a big softy. so vet says if that happens on the plane he might not come round.

Oh god - how bloody awful for you. It is hard and I would always say take the dog with you ( we are taking mine to NZ) but in this situation you would never forgive yourselves if something happened to him on the way.
I suppose you could put your move off for a couple of years until nature takes its course? Unless you wanted to rehome him in which case Boxer Rescue could help - or an ad in the vets might find a local home you could check out?

i really think he is to old to settle with someone who doesn't already love him. he can be grumpy with strangers (all of which is a front, he's a big coward really.)
i think my only option is to have a good chat with the vet and take the risk, at least he's getting a chance then. Do dogs still have to go into quarantine if they have a pet passport?

I am headed to NZ where dogs don't need to go into quarantine but as far as I know in Oz they have to stay in quarantine for 30 days pet passprt of not - you can visit them regulary though and everyone on this forum who has taken a dog has said they have through it ok, as far as I know.
You need to look at the DEFRA website for the regs on taking to OZ and there will be an OZ equivalent with info on it as well.
Mind you - there will probably someone along in a bit who will be able to help you more with the Oz stuff than me - good luck to you all - especially Oscar!
