The best family sized car you can but is the Toyota Camry Altise. Around $27,000 new. l bought one very reliable , never broken down, fantastic to drive, the engine is powerful enough and still economical with petrol. Would never buy a different model car after this one. l think it was judged to be the most reliable or one of the most reliable cars in OZ. if $20,000 is your limit
then its worth getting a second hand one with low Km's or mileage.

and now back to the original question

You may want to consider the car auctions where you can get some real bargains. One auction sells ex government cars with real low mileage and all well serviced.

I drive a government car so I know they're well serviced and we have them replaced after every 30k or every 3 years whichever comes earlier. There are Toyatas, Nissans and dare I say 4x4s

bloody hell..and you were saying I make you feel tall...

The XTrail is quite small compared to most of the Toorak Taxis. Our house is ...wait for it...100metres (or something ridiculous) from the road so I'm well justified..

just like to concur with Mel, the Camry is a ripper of a car.

It would be in my Top 3 to consider as a Sedan.

What about those of us who are semi rural and do use the 4WD aswell. How about a "transformer"
If you live kms up an unsealed road fair enough but plenty just get different shock absorbers.

Those who I know that go off road use a Nissan Patrol or Toyota Landcruiser. Rav 4s, Xtrails etc are for the aspirational 4wder or hairdresser.

I believe a new transformers film is being made. Chainsawotron might interest you.

I agree to a certain extent but if a motor comes in with under 30k on the clock with all the log books you'd have to be mighty unlucky to get a dud un. Most still have manufacturers waranty too.

Thing is with govvie cars too, if you thrash the thing the public are more than happy to dob you in it

In WA we have blue number plates to identify the motor as government property..............

I'm afraid this thread has got hijacked. But back to the origional question. I used to drive a Escort in the UK and now I drive a Ford Laser, it was 3 years old when I bought it and 30,000kms on the clock for $16,000. Had it just over 3 years and a 10,000kms service costs less than $100. It's very reliable and it holds it value very well. Mind you they stopped making them a couple of years ago but their are plenty of good second hand ones around.

Cars here don't rust like in the UK as they don't put salt on the roads in winter (in QLD they don't even have a winter). I'm more than happy with the vehicle as it does 600kms on a tank of petrol that only cost $40.

Must admit I'd like a 4WD but it would double my running costs and I'd only use the 4WD feature for about 1% of the time so at the mo I'll stick with my Laser. Similiar cars are Mazda 323 and Astra but I'm a Ford fan.

I read something the other days saying that Mitsubishi are in the red and may get bought out. That may invalidate any warranty.

Wouldnt the company that buys them out have to honour the warranty?

If you get your flat roof mended in the UK on a 10 year warranty then the owner winds up the company and starts another one in the same business they escape the warranty. Ok this is not exactly the same thing but businesses are very devious at getting out of commitments.

We got an x-trail, top of the range job. 2.5litre petrol. Not too happy with it, its very sluggish, considering its made of plastic (the bodywork bends like its uhhhhhm well, plastic).

I had a 1.6 litre Hyundai in the UK that would burn the arse of this. Not that I'm a hoon or anything

Cheers,
JTL
