Interesting post, but I'll throw a spanner in the works.
I wasn't able to get a PO box when I first arrived in Brisbane .....because I didn't have a permanent australian address in which to put on the form!!!!! I had lots of arguments with various post office staff about the fact that I had no permanant australian address was why I wanted a PO box in the first place but it fell on deaf ears. Had to use the hotel address where I was staying for the first 3 weeks as reference for the bank, RACQ etc and then changed it when I got a rental. Post office wouldn't even take the hotel address for the PO box. Maybe they just didn't like me. I've got a PO box now having used the rental address. Nick |

Re: what can you do without a permanent address....
Originally posted by scutterUK Hi there folks. it seems like ages since i've started a thread in here so here goes! i was having a think the other night (oo it hurt) about what i can and can't do in the first few weeks upon arrival in oz, with me not having a permanent postal address i mean. Obviously i'll be looking for something long-term to rent but until that happens i wont have a permanent address, just a temporary one. so the question to the masses is this. What can and can't be done with just a temporary postal address? for example, applying for an ozzie license, registering with Medicare, the tax number thingy, bank accounts, buying a car (or more importantly a BIKE!),... etc etc etc... you know what i mean - the stuff that must be done when you land. i know you can get a PO box and use that, but what can you do with a PO address? Is it classed as permanent? or is it just not acceptable? Any advice would be appreciated! :) cheers! leigh Hi, Don't know if it will help but when I was on a one year working visa I used my backpacker hostel in Cairns as an address for my medicare card. It took a couple of weeks to get but the hostel were happy to forward it on to the general post office in Brisbane for us to pickup when we got there. Alb. |

Nick trust someone to throw a spanner in to the works of my master plan!! ;) seriously though thanks for the warning. I suppose they have a point, from an arse covering perspective. But, as you say, if you have a permanent address why do you need a po box anyway? daft huh. oh well i had a quick word with my mate over there and he's happy for me to get all the junk mail sent to his house. Which is good for me as it's also cheaper..... :D alborg - cheers for that. did medicare ever question the address being a backpackers hostel? or did you just give them the address and not tell them about the hostel part. ;) cheers! |
I just gave them the hostel address (care of etc.). I didn't have a choice. It didn't turn out to be a problem.

Just realised we are in the same situation as scutter...
I think it'll only take a week or so to find a flat though. So the drivers license can wait. But tax file number and medicare will have to go on my friends address (even though I'm now not sure we can stay there, don't think she has room) But we can use her address and stay in a youth hostel. Thanks for the info people! :D |
Sounds like a business opportunity to me. Happy Koala Post Boxes???
We've got the same problem and no rellies.... |
