I like the look of this new Passat R36 performance model. 220kW and pretty luxurious. About $70k OTR.

Re: What 4x4 ?

:thumbup:in aus we have had toyota hilux ute,(husbands work) also had our owm pajero .
loved the ute for the tray, bikes etc,but the cab gave kids a very sickly ride literally.

Pajero great loved it.

now we have a new jeep long wheel base wrangler renegade model 5 door,( again via work),and it is the best 4x4 we have had ,reminds me of the old army land rovers i was carted around in as a army brat!

we have done alot of off road driving inland in forests etc, fraser island and beach stuff it has coped with not even a groan. It is a diesel model and pulls well, trailer and boat etc.for us its great as not fancy inside ,all doors and roof come off so fun on the beach.
would def recommend it,also not to big when doing the ususal runs in town.

me i'm a rev head i love my Lancer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

its all personnal ,toyota are popular as always esp with those that think they may one day go off road .
BEWARE THOUGH THEY all take ALOT OF PETROL AND AS YOU KNOW THAT IS NO LONGER CHEAP!!!!
sorry knocked caps on not shouting really...

Re: What 4x4 ?

The sickly ride is usually due to the fact weight balancing in a ute is different to a wagon.

In future whack 1/4 ton of sand in back of ute, to keep the ride smooth.

Or drive behind FluffytheCampFireSlayer !!!!! either way, same proportion of sand

Lets face it, they have no cred. Albeit, im not sure if SSangyongs, still have the ported merc engines innem.

Thats disappointing. Do they really depreciate that much? They have a good price tag for the 7 seater at 36k and as you say they do have the merc engine.

Our friend had one, and at first were in love with it. -

Im not sure about the engine, used to be the merc clone inside it.

My mate used to say,

Built by Koreans, Powered by Germans, Driven by knobheads.

- she traded up to a Prado. Not sure on her real thoughts but

I really want a 4x4, dual cab, turbo diesel utility but am no expert with the pro's and con's of each make.
If anyone can suggest a good place to look in the Perth area it would make my life easier too.

The reason you keep hearing Toyota is because they are regarded as , probably, the best off roader in oz!......reliable and as said by others......everywhere will have a Toyota expert / mechanic with parts widely available.
Also the Nissan Patrol is very highly regarded as a serious off roader as well.

I think Timber has already mentioned the Hilux, Navarra and triton as well.

Probably best sticking to the 3 above manufacturers.....Toyota, Nissan, and Mitsubishi in my opinion.

Can anyone comment on 4x4 from a slightly different perspective:

I am looking for an affordable (buying, spares, service/MOT etc), reliable, "economical" 4x4 - the marque brand/image means little to me.

So can anyone comment on which one (new or older models) would be suitable from this perspective?

Kia Sorrento diesel, won loads of awards, great 4x4 it's just the badge.

Re: What 4x4 ?

Cheers for all the advice regarding the 4x4, i ended up buying a 2000 Ford Courier dual cab 2.5 turbo diesel.
Reason being the need for a turbo diesel and my price range of maximum $13 000. It seems that as soon as a Toyota badge is put on it, the price increases by about $10 000 which i'm sure is because Toyota are probably top of the range.
Hope i don't live to regret it, but seeing as i'm not an off-road nut (but have a beach 2 minutes down the road which is 4x4 friendly) i hope it is a good choice.

Just buy a snatchum strap, and bull bag, a tirfor winch and mini compressor so you can deflate your tires for beach driving....... you will have no problems..........;)mm

I have a 2003 2.5 TD dual cab. My only grumble is it's not quite as economical as I'd hoped for. It's never let me down & I've done 150,000k's in it in the last two years. I get about 450k's to a tank full on average & I tow a tradies trailer everywhere.

Has anyone suggested gas conversion? Been told that government is giving $3000 towards it and there is not much difference in performance. But as the gas prices at the pumps are cheaper, this could be really good for the pocket.
