Re: Westpac
Hi mate,
I have recently opened an account with Wetpac and so far they seem fine.
Found the forms they sent a bit confusing but they were helpful when i contacted them.

Hi Macker,
I use them a fair bit and they're quite good. Banks charge for withdrawals via other ATM's so go for a bank with plenty of ATM locations. Westpac have a couple of really good Mortgage packages, which are very clever and worth a look.
Cheers

We have banked with Westpac since we have arrived and so far no problem. We set up the account in our local branch really easily. We compared different accounts with different banks and theirs was the best for us.

We joined them online from uk, but to be honest we changed it all when we got here, it was so much easier doing it in person.... very helpful staff who have explained everything really well so far so will see how we go

have over $2000 in normal account and no fees.
maxi saver savings acc pays 5.25% interest with no time limit.
went into byron bay branch, doidnt have an oz address so they sent em to any branch of our choice, and our address was the branch, til we got back to uk and changed it online.
When we picked up cheque book and cards at branch 3 weeks later iun a different state (bne, qld) we just showed our passport and put a pin on card in branch.
overall great service and good online bank too/you get statements sent to uk if you want as well

When you get your account you get an 'Everyday' one and a 'Maxi' one which pays the 5.25% interest or 5.85% if you have over a $100,000.00 in the account!
You also get interest monthly which is pretty good too but I think they all do this. If you have a decent Internet service etc then keep most of the cash in the Maxi account and transfer cash online in to the Everyday one as and when you need it as you do not get Interest on it there. You just get used to doing this if you have a couple of minutes to spare etc. You also get charged $5.00 per month for the bank account, but this will be waivered once the mortgage is sorted out for us along with a few other benefits too.

Yep we too have an account with them and so far so good!
They also do a mastercard which debits straight from your account so if you are having trouble getting a credit card for internet purchases etc ideal!!!!

Re: Westpac
well they have messed us around a lot.
we opened the account before we left and put some money in the account. when we arrived (the day after landing) we went to a branch near our friends house as we were using their address for correspondence - not a problem we were told just let us know your new address when you have it. Everything was going fine, OH even opened up a business account.
we were told that our handy cards and cheque books would be with us withing 7-10 days. only nothing arrived. we also wanted credit card - which we could also have.
So after waiting the 10 days we find out that yes the cards had been sent out - to our home address in the UK!!!! FFS - what use are they over there. so new ones would be issued. in the mean time we had a letter sent to us saying that our cards had been denied - this was our credit cards. okay fine, but what we wanted was our handy card. another visit to the branch to collect our "denied credit cards", all sorted there then - OH NO - cos we went to our firiends house to collect some bank letters which turned out to be "denied credit cards" WTF is going on here.
Anyway OH goes to local branch in Mandurah they cut up the cards that had been issued in the Thornlie branch and told him to use the new ones. Oh and his handy card has arrived, but not mine.
other than this they have been ok (for insurance and business help
