Western outpost
Letter from a local who thinks that living in a backward state is less than fun , well hes on a loser this state is full of NIMBYs who still have 1930 attitudes.
IS Western Australian turning into some sort of religious outpost? One would think so judging by those chest-beaters who are likening the state to something akin to the Garden of Eden before the fall. These wowsers seem to think that if we were to open our shops on a Sunday there would surely follow a complete collapse of the family in the state.
So grave is their concern is that they fear that the mere possibility that one might like to have the choice to shop on a Sunday will erode the cornerstone of the Anglo-Saxon family unit.
I honestly think that if this trend continues we'll all be compelled to grow a beard (well, the men anyway), wear a funny hat and be forced to abandon any device manufactured after 1700.
We have a model for this. The Amish people, who have deluded themselves into thinking that they aren't living in this century (or, indeed, the last) make quite a good living as a tourist attraction.
