Be great to get a thread here as well read and popular as ASNSW and QAS. Very interested in what WA ambulance service has to offer.
Although not as much info on WA Amb serv compared to the others.
Be great to hear anyones thoughts.

I went through the appilcation and was processed as an ICP and was going to Broome, which I asked for. But QLD processed my application the quickest so here I am :)

Hi John, thanks for the info.
Do SJA WA sponsor in international applicants as QAS and ASNSW do?
How did you find their application process?
I'm currently awaiting the LA for ASNSW to be renewed, but as it's taking so long, I'm seeking other options, just incase things don't work out.
Having been to Perth, Sydney and Brisbane, it's always going to be a tough choice of services! :)

Hi Mate

I applied for all 3 at the same time (NSW, QLD, WA). The process was painfully slowish, but I was in oz within 11 mths of applying. At the time, 2007, WA where sponsouring UK paramedics, I'm not sure what the situation is now thou. The process was fairly simple, application form with supporting documentation, then a telephone conference interview was organised.

Advice needed on St John's ambulance, please.

Hi,

I am a registered paramedic, working for a UK ambulance trust.

My wife and I are looking at moving to WA, transferring as a para. Could anyone tell me what the recruitment time usually is, (application and certificates in as we speak).
Do they help with the move with regards to costs etc.

What is the wage for a para with six year's experience?

I understand the work is different to the UK, they like to take more people in rather than treat at home!

Its just the quality of life we are looking at, for our two young girls, 3 and 19 months.

If anyone could answer some, if not all of the questions we would be very grateful.

Thanks

Hi, there is a new thread about this, unsure how to put in a link here, but if you search 'western australia ambulance service' or 'SJAA' it should show up.
I've recently applied and i'm in the early stages of recruitment, I'm hoping to find out in the next week or so pretty much all the info you want answering here.
Pay seems to be around $67000 p.a, dont know if that includes O/T and shift penalties etc. I do know they take on ambulance officers (Techs) and they also have an ICP level.
I'm after same as you, lifestyle would be great as have 3 kids under 6.

Phil :)

Hi, Ukparamedic818 and rootbeerfloat.

Telephone interview wasn't as bad as I thought, was a bit of a crackly line with a slight delay and I could hear my voice echo down the line

There were 2 or 3 asking q's, clinical management such as how would you deal with a given scenario, there are also q's such as why do you want to be a para etc. Pretty much the ususal stuff. Didn't have any problem with language barrier, they said we don't need to know their scope of practice, had a feeling they knew ours, eg JRCALC, and expect us to know it well!
Was well explained beforehand!
After phone interview it was medical/fitness test then psychometric testing, and finished with a teleconference/webcam interview all spread over 2 months.

They seem v.good at getting things sorted and e-mailed me often.

Hope thats helped you, and happy xmas to you all :)

can you fly a plane then?

Gems Feb 13th 2011 3:28 am

Re: Western Australia Ambulance Service/SJAA

The plane has only a doctor, nurse and pilot on board.

Had the pleasure of being on the super cramped RFDS at Christmas with my daughter. You would seriously need to like flying to go on that thing regular.
Noisy, very cramped and can be jumpy:eek:

Choose a bigger rural town and they have a SJA office with proper ambulance crews. Used this at Christmas for hospital transfer, v professional and new ambulance vans.

St Johns Ambulance and RFDS gets:thumbsup: from me

Hi Dave

the window of opportunity for state sponsorship are slowly but surely closing down. You need to grab it now unless you have skills or relatives that can get you a visa.

Thanks all,

No, I don't fly planes.... have fallen out of a couple though. Bigger rural would be fine, just not really a city person.

A colleague of mine is on her way over for a career break with SJA for 18 months, and we will be flying over for a holiday later this year.

Would love to drop everything and run now, but everything takes time! Plus the fact that my main breadwinner and better half has to finish off her contract here...

Hi Dave,

John is right, it seems QAS have scaled back recruitment, NSW amb serv still can't sponsor in international applicants, this has been on hold for 18months now. WA seem to be the main sponsor now.
From applying to WA and getting job offer took 5 months, which flew by!
Applications open until March :D

Re: Western Australia Ambulance Service/SJAA

This is probably a stupid question and I am expecting the answer to be no but do the Australian ambulance services (in any state) except oversees applicants onto their trainee schemes in order to become a paramedic.

I currently have no qualifications in this area. I would be looking to move over in about 1.5 years when I am finished my current degree in college. By then I would be able to complete a private EMT course and have some experience with a voluntary ambulance service.

Thanks

Hi, not a stupid question at all! But I would think that you would have to at least have a student visa to study in Australia to be considered. My advice is to contact SJA WA direct and any other services in Aus to get a straight answer.

Phil :)

Hey all, this is directed to I wan tee go OZ (or anyone else with experience with this), I am a Canadian paramedic, and just completed my video conference and I am awaiting a response for a job offer from the Metro Perth Service (SJAA). Just curious how long it was before you heard back from them? My interview was approx a week and a half a go and the family and I are biting our respective nails. Thanks for any help.

Garrett.

Re: Western Australia Ambulance Service/SJAA

emms21....hi, hope interview goes well. Very similar to management questions for amb serv/paramedic course in UK, eg basic airway management question going right through to how you'd manage an airway using adv. techniques.
Other advice I can give is to research their service from website etc.
good luck :)

tentoesover....hi, took about 8 or 9 days from tele-interview to getting job offer, was told it could take around 2 weeks.

Mine was e-mail as well followed by written offer and contract through the mail.
As soon as that happened it was a mad rush!
Visa process starts straightaway, lots to sort for that.
Start getting certified copies of passport, birth certs, qualification certs etc as soon as you can, although immigration agent does send you a list of what you need
