Before I went to Oz my cholesterol level was 4.2. After 2 years in Oz I had it checked and I was stunned to find it was up to 6.8. We've now been back in the UK for just under a year and its back to 4.5. Why? In Oz we went native and ate massive portions of food in restaurants, lots of bbq's, fresh fish and chips, $5 pizzas and regular visits to the fast food joints on every corner. The foods all very edible, but I'm glad to have shed my 'Sydney stone'. Its patently obvious why Aussies are lard asses!

We had a couple of very nice Domino pizzas up in Cairns last summer and not a barefoot in sight.

Have to say that we did notice quite a few of the little aussie school kids going barefoot to and from school, but so what? No big deal to us.

Personally, i imagine your feet would smell less, than if they'd been couped up in shoes in 100 degree heat all day, and certainly no worse than those who choose not to use deoderant or buy a bar of soap every once in a while!

Foot fungus verucas and smells are the reason I don't go barefoot. Thank god for thongs.

Anyhow TinaJ is explaining why it is so easy to become a lard arse here. Junk food is easier and cheaper to get than healthy food.

Plus Dominoes pizzas are horrible. If any of you are in Sydney try Arthurs Pizza on Oxford St in Paddington or TooFatz in Bondi Beach. Proper thin crusts with tasty toppings.

i thought she was just happy with the cheap pizza's and fish etc, wont automatically make you a lard arse as long as you keep fit etc........mind you some people would be too snobby to go to the gym where there are sweaty bodies.

I had my colestoral checked in Sydney last tyear and it was so low it was probably unhealthy - something like 1.8-2 ( can't remember!) .

And its not as if I am as skinny as a bone, I do carry some weight on me. My body BMI = 27 (high) but I am 12pc fat. I have put on 2 stone in weight since I was 17, but I have the same waist size still.

You are right there but obesity rates are soaring and childhood type 2 diabetes is on the increase. The reason is both lack of exercise and a high cal and high fat diet.

The UK is only marginally behind on this matter. The healthy Oz lifestyle still requires effort.

But But but but.....they do low fat cheese for an extra 50 cents!!!!

They even have pizza days at the kids school. I must say the pizza novelty is starting to wear a bit thin. I mean 52 pizzas in the last year can only hold their appeal for so long...

I think our local chippy does the best chips though.

Has anyone else found that quite often they tend to replace the tomato base with a base of that horrible cheap shredded ham. Barbecue chicken is a bit good though

Emergency workers remove 300kg man from apartment

A cherry picker has been used to remove an obese man trapped in his third-floor inner Sydney apartment and take him to hospital.

Ambulance officers were called to the Waterloo apartment this evening to assist the critically ill man, an ambulance spokeswoman said.

In a joint effort, officers from three emergency services worked for several hours to free the man, who reportedly weighed more than 300kg.

Radio reports said a cherry picker was used to lift the man out of the apartment and into a truck-style ambulance.

"Multi ambulance resources were dispatched to a unit block in Waterloo this evening to a seriously ill man," an ambulance spokeswoman said.

"It was a long and difficult extrication which included the resources of ambulance, police and fire brigade to get him out."

The man, believed to be 30 years old, was taken to the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in a critical condition. It was not immediately known what he was suffering from.
