Pete,
Are you saying that $80.00 is expensive. That converts to about what I paid for my .com name, so I think that is ok. I have a .com & a .co.uk. So would keep the .com and convert the .co.uk to .com.au.
I am not sure what my bandwidth is so can not coment on that one.

Hi,
I have been in Oz for around 18 months now moving from from Southampton, UK and have formed a small Website studio on the Sunshine coast.
As for Hosting, most of my clients sign up for one of my Silver Hosting packages, for $Au 75.00 per quarter the following is included:
5 GB Monthly Bandwidth
130 MB Disk Space
1 Year Domain Name registration or Renewal
E-Mail Forwarding - Unlimited
Business E-Mail (POP) Accounts
E-Mail Forwarding - Unlimited
Perl/Python/PHP/SSI
MySQL Database Support
FTP Access
Does that sound expensive to you?
If you would like me to transfer any sites over, no problem.
Domains such as .com are free with most Hosting company’s or just $Au 13.50 to purchase, but .com.au carries an extra charge of $Au 80.00 and you would have to prove you are a registered company (this is the cheapest price we have found).
Hope you find this info helpful, just drop me a line if you need any web advice or any info on on settling in Oz for that matter.
Good luck
Jeremy Irons

Ta for the links.
Jez....yes you are a bit pricey compared wo what i am paying here in the UK....but that is the best quote i've yet seen in oz for the amount of space and b/w....
You say i need proof im a registered company?
What proof do you need?
I am not yet set up as a campany, but intend to set up a small photography business upon arrival. Take it this means i can't get the domain name until i get out there.....

I was planning on buying the domains before I came out, but had to wait till the company was registered here and I had the official documents.

Yes, I am afraid you will have to set up in Australia first.
Here is a link to the official “AUDA Website explaining the criteria you will need to register for a .com.au Domain name:
http://www.auda.org.au/
Is it not maybe worth just registering for a .com Domain until your Business is fully set up over here?
Good luck with everything and let me know if I can help.

I believe you have to prove that you are a company with the name being registered, i.e. FooBar.com.au has to be registered by the company FooBar or the company that holds that trademark.
I'd suggest you get a generic domain from a UK company. I use a ".net" address from Easyspace in the UK.

You don't need to have a limited company established - you can obtain a .com.au domain name if you have a registered business name in place.
Business Names registration is dealt with at State/Territory level, and tends to be part of the consumer affairs department.
Links to register business names are available via this weblink:
http://www.gomatilda.com/business_is...ness_names.cfm
Note though that you can expect to be required to have a business address in the State or Territory before you can register the name => if you haven't yet moved to Australia you could use a local accountant's or solicitor's address, or approach a serviced office to act as a virtual address for you.
Best regards.

Was going to use these guys - seem genuine enough. But family commitments have put a stopper on my (pet) project for the moment.
The quotes seem quite good though..
http://www.aussiehosts.com.au
They also run a general web hosting talk forum which allows competitor web hosting sites to advertise 'special' deals.

P.S. I have no affiliation with this crowd.
