In answer to the question did I find webcams, email etc helpful, sure they are good to have, but for me some fuzzy pictures or email chats ment very little in place of a family. Bit like having a picture of a box of chocolates when you fancy a nice big bar of Cadburys Dairy Milk.

Thanks Pommiesheila,

just trying to be constructive rather than having a downer on everything. At the end of the day they are only a plane ride away (its a fact), it's just a matter of priorities whether you care to afford it or not...

Mash,

All this "your family are only a plane ride away" business is what we convinced ourselves with in the first place. However, the reality is that it costs $9,000 to get a family of 4 back to the UK, and grandparents are ageing all the time and won`t always be able to stand the very long flights and jet lag etc.

The fact is, its a very, very long way away. See others posts on this too - it`s not just my opinion.

When the average wage in Oz is around $36,000 how many families would give 1st priority to spending 25% of their annual income on a flight back to the UK???

You cannot relate the UK to being only a plane ride away or relate it to being only 12000 miles away.... it's £600-£700 return each... and for a family of 4??

If it's important enough you'll do it somehow.
