Default Waver on Custom Duties for first time Immigrants?

Hello Everybody

My Greetings.

One of our friend told us that we do not have to pay for the custom duties on goods shipped to Australia as we are entering for the first time on Residence Visa. Any info please.

Always verify things you are 'told'
http://www.customs.gov.au

Normally there is an exemption for goods you have owned for 12 months. While you're at it check http://www.aqis.gov.au as there are certain things they don't like.

Check this

http://www.customs.gov.au/site/page.cfm?u=4352

what i understand from this is I do not have to pay custom duty for the goods shipped worth less than $900.

"A$900 worth of goods (A$450 for people under 18) including gifts (given to you or intended for others), souvenirs, cameras, electronic equipment, leather goods, perfume concentrates, jewellery, watches and sporting equipment. Alcohol and tobacco products cannot be included in this allowance.

These goods can be:

obtained overseas
purchased in Australia duty or tax free before departure
goods for which a tax refund has been approved through the Tourist Refund Scheme
purchased from an inwards duty free shop on arrival. "

Pls enlighten...

That's just the normal duty-free allowance that everyone gets when they come into the country. It's a TOTAL amount - ie the value of your goods added together must not be greater than $900 - or you're liable for duty.

Not much help if you're shipping a house-full!
