Wanted Down Under
I was interested to find out what folk here are making of the TV show Wanted down under on BBC, I think it's repeats.
I watched a couple the other night who had £200,000 to spend on a home in Sydney & they put them up in a flat in Mosman! For starters they would be lucky to get a parking space in Mosman for that price so why not put them up in an area that they are likely to afford the type of home they are looking for? Instead they take them to a hovel that they actually could afford to hear them moan & groan about it, the next home is lovely & Nadia says in the most patronising manner you could afford this but you would have to work all the hours god sends & have no contact with the outside world or perhaps selling one of your children into slavery would do it lol (the wife or significant other is generally horrified that they would actually have to get a job! Ok I admit it I love that bit
)
And just where have they dredged the families from for the program? None of them seem to have done any research into moving to Australia, ok they do stop short of saying that they thought every tree would have a koala in it but come on did they really think that moving to Oz was going to be bbq's, socialising but they wouldn't need to work. The guy in the program after his one day of work, was offered a job (great to live in the perfect world isn't it?) then turned round & said he didn't even know if he wanted to continue in that line of work.
And to make you feel just that little bit worse if you were considering moving to the hovel that you could afford without selling any children, doing the boring job that you don't actually know if you want to do anyway they show you videos of your nearest & dearest gushing about how much they will miss your weekly visits for tea!
Is it just me being cynical or is this just a way for people to have a short break in Australia? They never deal with the real situations that people face on these forums the unsold houses, the guilt felt leaving family & friends, the costs involved in the move. Is it the same for other cities that they show?

I particularly like the bits in this show when they are shown a wonderful house in a similar price bracket to their's in the UK, then within a couple of minutes are being offered a job for about half what they get at present while being told they're making a lifestyle choice! Compulsive viewing but utterly useless for anything other than a free holiday!!!
Script one: 'Fantastic, you've chosen the Sydney city lifestyle, here's a house in Newcastle!'
Script two: 'You've opted for the Brisbane setup, here's a lovely house in the Gold Coast Hinterland!'

Please remember when commenting on the families themselves that a lot of those involved in this type of programme are BE posters.

It's true, we applied for one of these types of shows after our first visit to Oz in '02. We're WERE just after the free holiday though.... we already knew we'd move here in a heartbeat. Strangely enough, we weren't shortlisted for the show.

As long as you look at these programmes and class them alongside the Eastenders and Corrie programmes you'll be fine. Assume they are real and you'll be lost.
