The desert tends to act as a buffer for the spread of many exotics (though certainly not all) across the continent, and the WA authorities are I believe simply erring on the cautious. Having said that, I think some species can be brought in with a special license, though I've no idea what sort of succulent PL has tried to bring in. If it's a plant already established, or native to, WA then it seems a bit harsh. :) Phew..! |

When I see pathetic laws here and silly attitudes by 'jobsworths' it makes you think so. Example, the silly rules that state what you can and cant grow in your gardens, even plants that have NO risk to the indigenous plants here, yet AQIS/Dept of Agriculture have to throw the baby out with the bathwater and ban so many plants that arent a particular risk! I was trying to bring a particular succulent plant into WA, and I recieved a standard letter from them saying that the plant was unidentified! For goodness sake, this succulent itsnt even rare, and dont they emply botanists or something? Anywonder why there are hardly any tall trees around metro Perth, yet plenty in Sydney? Now before those who will say 'well go back home then', can I at least have some other examples of the Wait Awhile way of life please? Yes WA is a lovely state and has a great deal to offer, but please, there is so much room for improvement and efficiency. Normally when you dig a bit deeper into laws like this you find they are there for a reason (maybe not one we like but a reason none the less) Am sure AQIS didnt make this rule just to piss you off. They have very rigorous rules to follow to get a plant onto the 'restricted' list. Plus I would have thought you being a landscape gardener could appreciate the principle behind plant restrictions. FFS if a LG cant appreciate, what chance the rest of us ???? |

I think they class them as Nurseries rather than Garden Centres. Steve :) |

Not sure what you are getting at VK, but no this succulent is rare unlike rabbits! no comparison. But is it common in the UK as it is a plant that is cold hardy and I thought it being a SA native it would do well in Perth. Being a Gardener has zilch to do with it. Im still learning a slightly different way of gardening over here to the UK. Oh by the way, still waiting for the trip to Garden Island. Thanks for the 'nice' tone you respond to me with. |

I don't really see the point of bring in a new plant when it's untested. How do *you* know it poses no harm to the native plantlife? Are you a botanist? There've been so many stuff ups in Australia with foxes, cane toads, pondweed, ferral cats, that pear-cactus thing to name some well-known examples that I hardly think you've been hard done by compared to the potential for disaster (OK, disaster's a strong word, but you know what I mean!) if your "harmless succlent" went on the rampage! Now jobsworths, bank workers, freeway speed limits of 100kms an hour - you would have got me with those..... Michelle Michelle Secondly, I am a horticulturist and its bloody hard trying to get a list fromn AQIS in the 1st place of what is and isnt allowed into WA, thay hardly publicise it! Anyway, why am I gettin g all this sh*t just for pointing out a fault with a system, rediculous. Be nice if some of the 'real' people who have 'realistic minsets' would kindly back me up! Rest of you seem to be on cloud cuckooland. Just because my views may not glow with yours, I get put down. |

Waldecks as someone said(I know there's on in the middle of Subiaco!), and I found a garden centre in the industrial part of Osborne Park(near the West News offices)..... |
Re: Is WA really the backward State?
There's a small garden centre across Joondalup boulevard opposite Lakeside shopping centre and I've definitely passed another on Wannaroo Rd somewhere towards Ocean Reef Rd. I thought that you were an expert on all things up here Renth! (PS Our rental garden would be gorgeous if the vast areas of rockery were planted up rather than full of weeds),

My post that read "maybe I haven't been looking" may have given the wrong impression. I hate gardening, used to hate going to garden centres in the UK and am glad that (bacause I took the house off the market in the UK) am not going to have to do any gardening here for quite a while :D |

Only mowed the lawn two weeks ago, and it already needs again nearly, arghh! Luckily not too many beds with weeds, but still plenty to keep him busy every so often! The roses are great though, have flowered 5 times in 1 year!! :D |
