Default WA a Paradise

I am a true Aussie by the look of this not only a paper one , I have the lifestyle required to be a WA guy , must take up fags .

WA'S love affair with alcohol and tobacco is running up hospital bills almost 10 times higher than those caused by other drugs.

Tobacco is the most expensive drain on the health system, costing hospitals an average of $48.9 million a year from 1995 to 2001.

Alcohol is not far behind with an average annual cost of $28.9 million. In contrast, the cost of treating patients with health problems associated with illicit and prescription drugs is $7.9 million per year.

WHILE John Howard has been distracting the Australian public with the phony war on terror in Iraq, 500,000 Australians have become Hepatitis C positive, many due to intravenous drug abuse.

Although 80 per cent will respond to medication, this will come at a cost of $250 million (the cost of the war). Many more will face liver transplants.

It is time for a war on the terror of hopelessness, despair and lack of opportunity. With poor education, unemployment and family breakdowns, these are the root causes of drug addiction. We must invest in preventative strategies before thousands of Australians needlessly die because of Hepatitis C, more than those who will be killed by terrorists.
Dr COLIN HUGHES, Greenmount.
