Part of 3 uses Telstra (GSM/UMTS) and part uses Vodafone (3G), hence probably the differences seen by lou1003.

I've been with Vodafone for some time, with no problems.
The current market share divided by the three providers is about:
10 million 40% Telstra subscribers (46% in 2003)
8 million 32% Optus subscribers (34% in 2003)
7 million 28% Vodaphone (VHA) subscribers (18% in 2003)
Interestingly, both Telstra and Optus have dropped market share since 2003, while Vodafone has increased rapidly.

Interesting, I didn't know they were merging - cheaper (free!) calls between me and the other half now!
