Just when I thought I have successfully explained this, I now have to complicate it just a tad further. Bear with me

Your Debit visa card operates as a psuedo credit card ONLY if you (at point of sale) use the CREDIT key OR for other transactions (phone, internet) use the card number on the front (and sometimes the last 3 digits on the panel on the reverse also).

In reality it is linked to a day to day savings or cheque account BUT for transactions processed under the above method, operates as a CREDIT card.

You cannot use the savings/cheque account directly to make purchases over phone or internet.

You can elect to do so at point of sale but then that detracts from the whole point of having the CREDIT function ability as the transaction would then be treated as an ordinary debit one and you would pay fees on it.

i agree with everything kiwichild has said about VISA debit cards.

don't forget there are visas "delta" and mastercards "switch" debit cards in the uk which are different again from a pure VISA debit card, which to a merchant is INDISTINGUISHABLE from a VISA credit card.

all the transcations are handled by a process between the merchant and VISA in the same way, it is then VISA that process onwards to the banks, a transparent process to the merchant.

VISA has Visa Electron
Mastercard has Mastercard Electronic

Visa Electron and Mastercard Electronic are different from Visa and Mastercard respectively

I have a Mastercard Electronic, issued in the Philippines. It's a debit card and was introduced to the country only a couple of months ago. So far I've been able to use it for online purchases, hotel reservation, and groceries. I have come across some shops though who wouldn't accept it, they accept Mastercard though.

So in short there are shops that accept Matercard only and not Mastercard Electron.

Hope this helps

But VISA also has just a VISA debit card. Which is different from VISA Electron. And if you have a VISA debit card (like mine issued by Suncorp) then it is accepted everywhere a VISA credit card is. No questions asked, no rainchecks (lol, I still after 5 years have no idea what that means, but it might fit here), no worries
