Default Validation visit - Things To Do

Just booked my flights for our validation trip (fingers crossed) in December.

Does anybody have any top tips for practical things to do when out there?

So far I have on my list:-

Open a bank account
Join a job agency
Look at suburbs for potential rentals

Can you get a Tax File Number at that stage?

My to do lists just keep getting longer and longer - it'd be nice to check a few things off before we move out there next April. (inshallah)

Hi Olive,

Enjoy yourself,

The hardest thing we found was trying to pick a suburb, be prepared to do a lot of driving unless you have an area in mind.

By the way we are in Kelvedon Hatch.

after about ten days can register with medicare - need to leave it hat long to let the computers at DIMIA register you to them - people suggest you take passport and old NHS card with you - though only passport and visa may be needed

I don't have the slightest idea which 'burbs are nice! Any good tips? Green, quiet and friendly, not too far from the centre of Adelaide.... (Utopia in fact!)

Kelvedon Hatch - It really is a small world!

Does anyone know how long it takes your TFN to arrive in the mail in Aus, once you apply online?

You do qualify immediately.

The Australian Medicare Program provides access to medical and hospital services for all Australian residents and certain categories of visitors to Australia

Medicare web site

You also qualify for Family Benefits, Child Care and Rent Asssistance in some cases. Without the 2 year wait.

Norwood and St Peters or surrounding areas fit what you are looking for.

half an hour on the Adelaidebrits site would answer pretty much all of your questions...have you not been there yet?

My recommendation: don't get a Tax File Number until you make the permanent move to Australia. There's no point unless you have income that is assessable in Australia.

Best regards.

Yes, i suppose it would send you to sleep if you lived in Sydney and only took a peek to be nosey.

On the otherhand, if you genuinely wanted good information and links to things pertaining directly to Adelaide, it would be very helpful.

But as the saying goes, you can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink.
