V8s and Hoons
Give a hoon (young Aussie ) a V8 and watch the fun ,well its only fun if you happen not to be near the lad with a death wish.
THE State's top trauma surgeon says radical measures are needed to combat the growing number of young people being maimed and injured in road crashes.
Royal Perth Hospital trauma services committee chairman Sudhakar Rao said a hard-core group of young men who ignored road rules were responsible for many of the crashes.
They did not listen to government road safety campaigns and were not deterred by the threat of fines or demerit points.
Alcohol interlocks, which stop drink-drivers starting their cars, and speed limiters should be used to curb their activities.
Dr Rao's comments were prompted by the carnage revealed in the hospital's latest trauma registry report.
The report showed a 12.4 per cent increase in trauma admissions over the previous year. Most patients were men aged 15 to 24 who were involved in metropolitan road accidents.

All the young are excellent drivers. They never drive high performance cars, never speed, never drink alcohol or take drugs. You never hear of a young brit having a road accident.

You are right in implying that it is a similar type of problem to the "boy racers" in the UK but in Oz it is on a very large and serious scale because the kids are so bored. Drugs, booze, and cars - there is little else the young have to do here. If you think that 15-25 year olds still want to go to the beaches and parks with mum and dad then you are way off. Once you are a teenager, Oz is a very dull place indeed, and bored teenagers do not have the outlets they do in the UK - hence a very large proportion endangering lives for a laugh. A hollow laugh though. I find Ozzie teenagers a very sad bunch indeed and very unhappy.

hang on a sec!!!
there's alot of Aussie kids that must be more bored than their UK counterparts??!! "outlets in the UK" - what outlets?!! what can kids do in the UK that Aussie kids can't? And lets not talk about culture and museums - how many kids enjoy that anyhow!?- I dare say.
I see kids on UK housing estates and the like in town and country and they have no more to do than in Australia. I never see kids in Aus on street corners now. As least they hang out on the beach! Most aussie kids would find UK kids quite limited I reckon.
When I was 22 on a summer camp in the USA the brit teenagers and to a less extent, Yank teenagers were loutish, scruffy. miserable, the aussie teenagers were the happiest and most well balanced group there. Every day the aussie girls greeted me with a smile and a wave - they were the most positive, most laid back, confident teenagers I had ever known at the time. The Brits kept themselves to themselves and talked about soccer, shaved their hair off etc. It was quite an eye opener to me to see how ill equipped socially the Brits were - in fact I was embarassed. The Aussies were literally smiling every day, the Yanks were always trying to be cool and the Brits just watched everything go on from a distance hopelessly ill-equipped to join in the fun. Apart from the occasional derisory comment or soccer song. I'm serious! Me - well I hanged around with the Aussies. Felt more at home. ;-) We did a house "sporting fitness" competition which an aussie won, I came in the top 3 (only Brit to participate!) the Aussies wiped the board..
Kids will be bored anywhere - they are not old enough to go to bars etc so naturally there will be fustrations. At least in Aussie the weather is better so there's less time cooped up inside.

Put simply....
25 million cars in UK.....360'000 accidents a year.
10.5 million cars in Oz......17'000 accidents a year.
Certainly know where i'd rather be on the road.
And "hoons" in the UK are VERY VERY common. Do any trip over here and you will pass at least one or two little dickheads sitting in thier hotted up renault 5 or ford escort, boom box a boomin, just ready to rob the next granny round the corner.
As with EVERYTHING......its a problem all countries have to bear.

there's something to be said for the bigger the car the safer it is as well.....
a V8 is likely to be bigger than a little buzz box....
