Depends on your definition of expensive billy, no way I would go back to dialup anyway, but it was costing me almost the same as having broadband when I had it. I dont consider $50/month for cable expensive!

As for the router, I will let someone else answer, Dagboy should know, thats his field of expertise.

Dunno who does unlimited downloads anymore, why the hell do you need that much anyway .. we have 3 gig or something & never even use one tenth of our d/load limit anyway! Although of course sheep porn doesnt come cheap in this country, unlike NZ .

Have a look at whirlpool forums & broadband choice . Some geek there will know the answer to the router question as well .

Depends on the make/model and whether the user can modify VPI/VCI & other connection settings (in laymans terms how the router/modem communicates with the DSLAM in the telephone exchange). Each country has slightly different settings - for example NZ uses a VPI of 0 and a VCI of 100. In Australia VPI=8 & VCI=35. Generally speaking, the vast majority of equipment can be re-configured, especially if it is an expensive model with lots of bells & whistles like wireless.

One other thing to consider is that unless it's from a major manufacturer (eg D-Link/Cisco etc) it very probably won't be on Telstra's list of 'approved equipment' meaning that technically it is illegal to connect it to the telephone/ADSL network. If you had problems connecting to an ADSL service, you'd be 'on your own' so to speak - I wouldn't expect support from Telstra for a non approved modem!

Here is a list of approved ADSL modems/routers & the configuration settings you will need to enter to get it to work:
(I have no idea how current this list is - I expect Telstra have it hidden away on their website somewhere. Had a quick look, but couldn't find it)

Rgds,

Russ

Hiya Welshboybilly

I want to start to down loading films and have been recommended Kazaa. How do you rate it? We have a carboot in Wolverhampton where I buy all the latest movies for a £1, watched "Nemo" last weekend. Any info on them would be great. You can always PM me if it is not a topic for the discussion board.

i dont mind discussing it here, i would suggest getting the lite version of kazaa which supposedly comes without the bundle of spyware.

it is well worth downloading, you would be suprised as to the quantity and quality of films, software, mp3 that are available.

i also watched nemo last week, my duaghter went to school and told the teacher she had seen it though........it had not come out yet.

For broadband comparisons go to www.whirlpool.net.au

There are unlimited "broadband" ISPs out there for about $70 a month.

In theory your router should work. One way to check is to e-mail your supplier or router manufacturer or look to see if is on www.ht.com.au.

Speaking as a PC novice here, we have an external Motorola Broadband Modem. Will it work in Oz if we get Broadband and if not what is different about their models?
