Have a look at whirlpool forums & broadband choice . Some geek there will know the answer to the router question as well .

One other thing to consider is that unless it's from a major manufacturer (eg D-Link/Cisco etc) it very probably won't be on Telstra's list of 'approved equipment' meaning that technically it is illegal to connect it to the telephone/ADSL network. If you had problems connecting to an ADSL service, you'd be 'on your own' so to speak - I wouldn't expect support from Telstra for a non approved modem!

Each country has slightly different settings - for example NZ uses a VPI of 0 and a VCI of 100. In Australia VPI=8 & VCI=35. Generally speaking, the vast majority of equipment can be re-configured, especially if it is an expensive model with lots of bells & whistles like wireless.

Here is a list of approved ADSL modems/routers & the configuration settings you will need to enter to get it to work:
(I have no idea how current this list is - I expect Telstra have it hidden away on their website somewhere. Had a quick look, but couldn't find it)

I want to start to down loading films and have been recommended Kazaa. How do you rate it? We have a carboot in Wolverhampton where I buy all the latest movies for a £1, watched "Nemo" last weekend. Any info on them would be great. You can always PM me if it is not a topic for the discussion board.

For broadband comparisons go to www.whirlpool.net.au
There are unlimited "broadband" ISPs out there for about $70 a month.
In theory your router should work. One way to check is to e-mail your supplier or router manufacturer or look to see if is on www.ht.com.au.

Speaking as a PC novice here, we have an external Motorola Broadband Modem. Will it work in Oz if we get Broadband and if not what is different about their models?
