Default University - stay in college?

Hi there,
Can anyone explain to me the Australian university college system. Is it collegiate like Oxbridge? Do you have to stay in colleges? Do you tend to stay in a college the first year only and then branch out to share a house with others? Trying to work out what it's going to cost us and the college fees are quite expensive $10-12k p.a. though this does include all your food and bills. Just travel, books, entertainment, fees etc on top.
Would appreciate advice.

Ta

I'm not sure any Australian universities are collegiate like Oxbridge or Durham.
These are the top universities - http://www.go8.edu.au

No, students don't stay in colleges as a rule. Most uni students go to uni in their home city so the great majority live at home or share flats. Some unis (particularly the ones out of the cities) have a higher proportion of students living-in (New England in NSW springs to mind) but 'colleges' are really more like Halls of Residence. Sydney Uni has a few 'colleges', but most students living there tend to be from the country (or have rich parents).

Thanks nicky, sent karma.

Was starting to panic a bit about how much it was all going to cost. When you go on the university websites there seem to be a lot of extra fees and costs and my son was starting to wonder how he was going to pay for it all as he won't be eligible (as a new resident) for a student loan.

Any other info on costs (apart from fees) anyone?
