University in Oz?
Hi all. (this isnt 'goldengirl', but its her son here!)
I am leaving school in June this year, and as we are thinking of moving to australia (undecided which part yet- although I think it may well be Sydney) , and by the time we actually move I would have finished college, so I would want to start university, then probably go into some kind of management or something.
What are the uni's in Oz like? Also, how expensive is it ? Any info appreciated, cheers.

Like everywhere else, some Australian universities are better than others, but in general the standard is high and certainly up to the standards of other developed countries.
Costs are very high, but Australian residents get a variety of grants, loans and allowances, some means-tested. I'm afraid I don't know much about the system, but I would have a fear that as a newly-arrived PR you might not qualify for a lot of what's going, so for you in particular it could be very expensive. You should probably check this out as a matter of urgency.
The academic year runs January-December, so if you finish up in the UK in June 2003 you are looking at starting in January 2004. I don't know when applications are normally made, but I would guess that you have very little time left.
What degree do you want to take?

Here's two websites with links to various Australian Universities and TAFE colleges. Maybe you might want to accliamtize in your first 6 months with a TAFE course ?
http://www.avcc.edu.au/australias_unis/individual_unis/
http://www.webwombat.com.au/careers_...ories/tafe.htm
also a page with info on HECS (the Aussie Government student Loans scheme) http://www.hecs.gov.au/
There will be a difference in fees if you are a Resident versus an Overseas Student
