Default University Fees in Oz...

Who has been in Australia long enough to have children going through University - and how do you fund it?

As far as I am aware, if you have PR status, then you pay the domestic rates...........but you have to pay up front. You can only defer payment till earning if you are a citizen.
If you are classed as an International Stuent it is horrendously expensive and once again you have to pay up front.

I work as a lecturer in a major (top eight) Australian University and would not pay for my child to go here. The standard is lower than I could have imagined after coming from the UK. Even basic grammar in seemingly bright Australian kids is lacking. Some essays appear more like mobile phone text messages. I am teaching somewhat lower than A' level standard even to second years. The very high proportion of overseas students does not help teaching due to their English limitations, but often they perform better or as well as Australians because the rest of their education is more solid. If possible, send them back to the UK or Europe (I've worked in the UK but know many in Europian mainland Unis), or the US if you can afford it! Universities here are degree factories.

hi steve, think i can help. Me and hubby, and 3 kids came over xmas, PR he had a job, my 19 yr old daughter did not want to come, then a few months later and after coming on hols decided she wanted to study here. She has come on student visa to do teacher training, 4 yr course will be $48000 i am now applying for residency for her which will save me 32000, so for 4 years it will be 16,000, what a difference eh.hope that helps.
