Hi just wondering if i manage to get into oz on a 189 or 190 visa and take my daughter with me who will be 16 at the time. What are the likely costs for university for vetenary when she is 18. Will we get charged a premium because we are not permanent residents??

Not sure of the cost but both 189 and 190 are PR visas, so you wont be charged international fees

No international fees, but you have to pay up-front as no HECS (government loan).

Yes, on PR there won't be international fees. Costs depend on the course of study. As an example, our son is doing Civil Engineering at UQ and costs $4k per semester = $8k per annum.

My son will be starting a double degree next year and we're expecting it to cost up to $11k PA. Without the government loan it's going to be a financial juggling act - especially when younger son joins him.

We've had one doing an Engineering degree and one doing an IT degree, thank goodness we've obtained citizenship before the youngest starts his engineering degree!

We're hoping to do the same in time for our youngest as well.

So it's fee paying time. Spoke to some collegues at work and all said they left it to their kids to pay (through HECS) which surprised me a bit. Is this what most parents here in Aus do?

I would say most parents help out with fees and/or living costs, but most end up with a substantial HECS debt. Most do part time work to have some money.
Austudy pays very little and is means tested so not worth the bother applying.

I work at a major Uni and almost all of the Australian I have contact with are paying their own school fees and the parents help out with living expenses.

The first two boys weren't eligible for HECS to begin with - we paid first semester's fees for each of them and then it was up to them to fund the rest (they had policies from their grandparents which had matured at 18, just for this eventuality) - if they didn't have that, then I'd expect them to get part time jobs to help with the cost.

Now they get HECS they'll put it through that and pay for their books themselves.

We feed them, keep them and give them money for fares and food etc so they're happy with the situation. Well, I don't know if they're happy or not, if they're not they can always try moving out

We'll be paying for our daughter next year. Not going to HECS it even if we manage to become citizens by then, as we don't want her to start her life in debt. The uni fees are lower than the massive school fees she is costing us this year, so we will feel a little better off! She will also be living at home, but may get a part time job to help pay for her own social life.

We were originally intending to pay 100% of both our boys fees but have realised that such an additional burden will break us financially. Strangely, we are earning double what we were in the UK and live frugally but unlike the UK where we were doing nicely, we only just seem to make ends meet - but that's another issue.

What we are considering is to pay 50% of their fees which fits well with eldest because he'll be eligible for HECS in two years time - midway through his course, so we'll pay until his HECS eligibility and will follow the exact same arrangement with youngest.

Caroline, I'm sure you already know this but if your kids are eligible for HECS and you pay upfront in full you're entitled to a discount.
