Default Universities in Perth

Can anyone please advise me I am starting to look for Universities for my daughter who will be 19 when we arrive in Perth in August of this year. By then she will have completed and gained her A levels.

She is looking to apply for Unis in Perth and I wondered is it a similar procedure to the UCAS procedure here. Also, we are on a permanent 136 visa will we have to pay the fees upfront or will she get a student loan like she can get in the UK?

I am assuming she will not start Uni until Jan 2012 if she does get in anywhere?

Any advice on this matter would be greatly appreciated or if there are any 18 or 19 year olds to whom Hannah can discuss this with I am sure the transition to Perth for her will be alot smoother. (It has only taken me 4 years to get her out of the UK) ha ha.

Any advice on this matter would be greatly received.

Many thanks

Debbie

Got to pay up front I'm afraid.

It would be helpful to know what she wants to study. Different universities have different programs.

Also check as she may need to do entrance exams as A-Levels are not directly comparable with Australian qualifications.

My Daughter does Nursing and she gets a discounted rate but because she isnt a citizen she cant get the loan.
They have to pay per term and its per unit so far its cost me 2500 a term. We pay a couple weeks after she starts each term.
There isa huge cost for books etc but you can buy second hand but you have to be quick for those.
Im not sure about other Uni's or courses.

Try the www.bookdepository.com.au for textbooks, or other online sites. Likely to be cheaper than campus bookshops.

Nursing degrees in Perth are at:
Curtin University
Edith Cowan University
Murdoch University
Notre Dame University

There's also the enrolled course at TAFE, with pathways into uni for RN:
http://www.central.wa.edu.au/courses...px?tpId=217068, at lower fees, but takes more time compared with just doing the degree.

We are moving back to Perth at the end of March. We lived there for 5 years before returning to the UK in 2009.

My Daughter is now 19 and wants to do a Nursing Degree at Uni in Perth. She did her Tee's at school there and her grades good enough to get in.

Does anyone know if she would be entitiled to a loan as we didn't get citizenship before we left or would we have to pay for uni there?

Unless you have citizenship you have to pay in advance and cannot defer payment.Once a citizen you can defer payment and if you pay can get a 20% discount on payments.

As OP have mentioned above, you do have to pay all the fees upfront for each semester.

Im PR and I have got a teen currently doing Uni, and we pay per semester. The semester fees usually $2500+ have to be paid by 31 March at the latest.
Then you have to Pay the second semester by about 3 weeks after the 2nd semester has started.

If you dont pay by the census date, the dont allow you to study.

Im looking forward to citizenship this year.

For Nursing the fees are approx $2500 per semester (Full time load). Then you will need to books (expensive) and other equipment.

Does anyone know if we have lived in Australia for 5 years previously and have lived back in the UK for 2 years would our years spent there count towards citizenship years or would we have to start all over again when we move back in April? If they did our Daughter could apply for Citizenship as soon as we get back to help with the Uni fees?

Yes, the 5 years counts. No, your daughter could not apply as soon as you get back. She needs to meet the residency requirements like everyone else. www.citizenship.gov.au has a residency calculator which will tell you when she's going to be eligible.

Looks like permanent residency visas count, this is taken from www.goingtouni.gov.au website.

"Eligibility requirements for Commonwealth support
You are eligible for Commonwealth support for a unit of study if you meet all the following conditions. You must be :
an Australian citizen;
a New Zealand citizen who will be resident in Australia for the duration of your unit of study; or
the holder of a permanent visa who will be resident in Australia for the duration of your unit of study."

What does Hannah want to study? There is a course finder on that website which is handy, and of course different unis will be each be renowned for various courses. Both my daughters are at uni in Perth; one studying midwifery at Curtin, and the other studying Arts at UWA.

Commonwealth support only means that she will not be paying international fees. In order to get a HECS/HELP loan she will need to be a citizen.

Because of the absence exceeding 12 months, it may be at least 3 years before eligibility for citizenship is re-established.

One has to ask does everyone in the family have a valid Resident Return Visa?
