Of course, now that he is paying for laundry in camp, I'll have to remind him re: the receipts...

My accountant has always claimed for the scrub pants I was required to wear for nursing school. The ATO has always accepted the claim.

Thanks Dorothy, I shall remember that. It's been interesting reading everyone's perceptions on claiming tax back. I was under the impression we could claim it back as its for work purposes

Scrub pants though are not general work trousers from Target - I think  (closest I've been is Grey's Anatomy  - sorry Dorothy)

VT is a bit pricey, so also look at places like Workwear World. My pastry chef daughter buys her uniforms there

No you cannot. It needs to be a uniform, protective or something that is a recognisable to the profession, a chefs check pants are the example given. We all buy clothes for work, a business man cannot claim his suit.

And to another point, this is nothing to do with me not agreeing to something. It is about my reading the ATO website. :o

Scrub pants don't sound like regular clothing that you happen to wear for work though. Having said that, ATO have not looked at your claim, it is self assessment. They only look at it if they happen to pick you out for audit.

We had a recent tax consultation and were told dh could claim for covered shoes (as they are specific H&S requirement) but nothing else as he does not have a specific uniform. HTH.

I've already apologised for my mistake after seeing the link OS posted.

Nah, it's BE, this happens all the time, it's not really not an argument either. No apologies needed.

No need to apologise - it's not really an argument but a good discussion :)

Shows how crazy this whole tax system is -talked about it this week with some colleagues, we all wear uniform - some claim for extra shirts, socks, boots etc and get the money, and will probably never be questioned on it, whilst some of are almost too scared to claim the laundry allowance, never mind claim for buying extra gear.

Oops sorry for the wrong info!

I'm in the latter group too! In the 7 years I've worked in hospitals here I've only claimed for one pair of shoes for work (confirmed by my accountant). I know colleagues who claim for everything they wear to work and (wrongly) assumed you could ;)

Bit like us, we all claim differently and none of us know what iscorrect. Even those who use an accountant report differing results!

You can still claim for laundry at home, claim up to $1 per wash load against your tax... Just keep a diary of your washes. :)
