First of all, i am so sorry if this thread is in completely the wrong place but i got all confused and couldnt find where else to put it!

Im off to Adelaide later in the year, to join my boyfriend, on a 417 visa and am planning on working as a nurse with Healthcare Australia. Ive got my registration all sorted but i have recently been looking in to uniforms, just to pass the time in the night shifts at work!
The agency say they provide polo shirts, which is fine, but what trousers/bottoms do people usually wear? I read somewhere its mainly corporate wear opposed to the usual scrub trousers and tunic tops here in the UK, is this still true? I so, where do people find is the best place to buy uniforms?

Hi Susan. I work in a public hospital in Melbourne and the majority of staff just wear their own clothes! My own 'uniform' consists of a polo shirt and navy blue trousers I bought in a general clothes shop (Target to be precise ) Agency staff have their own specific polo shirts and most just wear a black skirt or trousers x

When I worked in a private hospital here I just wore the same trousers and a white blouse until my ordered uniform came through x

Thats good to know. I have been looking online for scrub type trousers as i find they are so comfy but im looking at $40 a pair! Target may be my next choice

$40 for a pair of work trousers isn't a bad price. You can claim them on your tax return too

I had heard that, my boyfriend raved about the tax he could claim for his first year over there.

I might order some them, and then also something cool like a skirt or shorts for the summer months!

$40 a pair is a very good price for a pair of work trousers. You will want something comfortable and will need to keep the heat in mind.

I found an Aussie website which is supposedly healthcare work wear and they do black cargo trousers or scrub type trousers. I'm guessing I probably won't know how the heat at work affects me until I try the different bottoms out though and also what the trousers will be like

Why on earth would somebody be able to claim an ordinary pair of trousers on a tax return? If it is merely to provide cover and warmth as opposed to providing some extra protection and is not uniform, then I see no reason why it would be allowable.

Well, the ATO seems to think differently than you. If you are required to wear a certain colour or style of clothing for your work then why on earth would you not be able to claim them on a tax return?

You know, just because you don't agree with something that doesn't make it wrong. Strange concept and all, but it's true!

If you're in Adelaide you can buy uniform trousers at Valerie Travers on Angas St Home - Valerie Travers

If you buy them for work and only use them for work you can claim for them. Same with the shoes etc.

I think you can claim workwear though (ie. highviz). I know our accountant was always asking hubby for receipts for laundry for his work gear and I was like, um, we wash it at home.

Of course, now that he is paying for laundry in camp, I'll have to remind him re: the receipts...

I think the cheat was to have the (tasteful) logo of the company embroidered on the pocket of the shirt - instant uniform and tax allowable.
