Unemployment to hit 10% by Christmas?
Thought this was an interesting piece in The Age today.

If 50000 extra people are thrown out of work each month (as happened in February) (and I reckon this is highly likely given that the economic cirisis is only just starting to hit Australia), this will mean a 10% jobless rate by Christmas.
Don't know why people didn't pick up on this earlier in the week when the new jobless figures were announced.
Makes the government's estimation of 7% by mid-2010 seem a bit unrealistic (nothing new there then)

Didn't the figures say 55000 permenant job losses, and 55000 (ish) temporary jobs GAINED?
So people are on temp contracts rather than permenant ones - our company has taken that policy at the moment. Still hiring, but on 6 month contracts.

Sure it will get bad. But it will never be as bad as the UK is going to get - hyperinflation anyone?

**** sight more than 10% around here - and has been since time immemorial. Currently running around the 12% mark, unless you're aged between 15 - 19 in which case the rate's 20%.
