Default UK tax return Help

Hubby has to fill in UK tax return as we still had property in UK last tax year. But we have no idea what to do. He also had a rebate which we know where to put on the tax form, we are just confused as to where to put the rental income and where to say we declare it in oz on our ozzie tax return.

Help

Hello Jo.

- Your rental income and expenses for the year to 5 April 2006 have to be entered on a Property supplement.

- If you are a non resident of the UK you should also complete a Non Residence supplement.

- If you departed the UK in UK tax year 2005/06 your other taxable income during the period up to your departure (eg salaried income and PAYE tax deducted) should also be included on the 2006 UK Tax Return.

- If you think you might want (or need) some assistance with your Tax Returns please feel able to send me an email with your telephone number.

Best regards.

So Alan do we not have to put in our UK ta return what we have earned since becoming an Australian tax resident?
My UK accountant wants to know all my earnings upto April, even though we left in January and payed our capital into our bank here.

Is the interest we have earned on our invetments here, just savings accounts, already taxed, as it is in the UK?

Thanks

Kevin

Alan will correct me, but as I understand it, once you leave the UK permanently, all income arising from overseas is excluded from the scope of UK tax (different rules for capital gains exist).

As Jeremy has said, there is a "split year" concession in the UK for income tax purposes which applies when you emigrate => you will have to ask your accountant why s/he wants information for the whole tax year.

Re Australian source interest - if you provide an Australian Tax File Number the payor of the interest will usually pay the interest on a gross basis (unlike the UK).

Best regards.
