Default UK Passport

A friend of ours needs her UK passport renewing (currently living in Perth) she hasn't been here long and needs to go home, 2 questions really:
1. Can she travel with less than 6 months left on her passport (if not returning here to Perth)
2. If she can't, who can she ask to sign her form to say that they have known her for 2 years or more, if she has only been here less than 6 months, obviously not knowing anyone in a professional capacity.
Any help would be great, you can apparently phone Brisbane here for any advise, but you have to give your credit card details and they charge $7 a question (or there abouts!)
many thanks

ps Here just over 3 months and loving it !!!

We lived in Flixton (about 5 minutes from the Trafford Centre). We love it here too, but finding the house prices a bit of a blow, we think a lot of people could be looking elsewhere too because of the prices, it would be fine if the salaries matched the rises! Have you been to Adelaide? we looked at possibly going that way or Melbourne, only because of the cost of living in comparison. Why are you heading to Adelaide?

Not sure whether there are any relevant details at the British High Commission's website:
http://bhc.britaus.net/Passports/passportsdefault.asp

Best regards.

Daren is an unknown quantity at this point
Default Re: UK Passport

Hi.we lost our sons passporet after being in perth for 3 weeks. We went onto www.britaus.net
From here we downloaded application forms and send the info to the address given. As we knew nobody,we just got the photos etc signed by the estate agent whom we rent off and sent a covering letter stating that we had only been in oz for 3 weeks. You can send without signatures, but it is not recommended,as it increases the time scale.
We received the new passport in 2 weeks, and then went to dimmia in perth city to get a new visa put in it.
We were impressed with the speed of the service. We also printed our own photos for the passport. The passport we got was also one of the new binary ones.
Hope this helps.

Heading to Adelaide cos that's were OH's job will be based, looking forward to it though cos it sounds like a really nice city, and we've seen a lot of the rest of Oz, so it will be something new.
