Default UK, OZ, NZ - UN Quality of life rankings

I've read the pro and con posts on migration between UK, OZ and NZ with a lot of interest and sympathy for the range of views expressed. I wondered how people relate their views to the UN Quality of Life surveys, which put OZ first in 2002, 3rd in 2003, behind Norway and Sweden, both times above Canada which was first for several years before that? The UK typically comes about 13th, NZ about 20th. OZ's performance next to the homogenous, social welfare paradises of Scandanavia is pretty remarkable. I can think of one major factor that wouls retard it - largish, marginalized Aborigal communities and one that gives it a large advantage - carefully selected, healthy, migrants, usually with some savings. And also, Australia's remarkably high urbanization rate (which also increases its crime) And I imagine the UK would be far higher up if SE were an entity in its own right. But NZ has these advantages and is far lower down. NZ also seems far lower on any per capita income/PPT table.

Any insights/opinions much appreciated!

No idea why NZ should come so far down the ranking on this. However, Auckland came equal 5th along with Sydney in the top cities to live for all round quality of life and Wellington came, I think, just inside the top 20. Not sure who carried out this study but it was considered enough to make the national news sokme months ago. Anyway, London was quite well down and as for other English cities...nowhere to be seen as far as I can remember.

So taking the two results together:

UK as a whole has better QoL than NZ
Auckland/Wellington have better QoL than any UK city

Therefore, it follows that UK non city QoL is better than NZ non city QoL. Hmmm - now that makes sense??

Tried to find some more info on the UN website about what factors were included in QoL scores. I failed.

Cheers....Southerner

ps. within NZ other small cities outscore Auckland's QoL scores consistently, but these are not ever included in international comparisons.

Default Here's the city list

Vancouver second-best city in world, study says

By JEFF GRAY
Globe and Mail Update

For the second year in a row, Vancouver has finished second in a study ranking quality of life in 215 world cities.

The study, from Mercer Human Resource Consulting — a firm with offices in 40 countries — takes into account public safety, political stability, economics, culture, personal freedom, schools, transit and other public services.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For the whole list
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Vancouver finished first in the same rankings two years ago, but slipped to second last year because of "traffic congestion" — leaving the top spot to Zurich. The Swiss city ranked first again this year.

In this year's survey, Toronto ranked 12th, tied with Brussels and the German city of Düsseldorf and up from 18th the year before. Ottawa was 20th, up five spots from last year. Montreal was 23rd, a two-spot improvement. Calgary was 26th, up from 31st.

Mercer said Scandinavian cities — which usually rank quite high on such surveys — were re-evaluated this year "on the basis of evidence relating to seasonal affective disorders caused by shorter daylight hours."

Some of their rankings appeared to slip as a result.

Helsinki dropped to 26th from sixth, while Oslo sank from 15th to 31st.

Many of the world's most-visited and most-romanticized cities rank quite low on the quality-of-life scale.

London ranked 39th, tied with Boston, Portland, the French city of Lyon and North Carolina's Winston-Salem. At 31st, Paris ranks behind Calgary, on par with the Australian cities of Brisbane and Adelaide and with Yokohama, Japan. New York ranked 44th.

The worst place in the world to live was Brazzaville, capital of the Republic of Congo. It ranked 215th. Many African cities were clustered at the bottom of the scale, but the Iraqi capital of Baghdad was third-last.

Mercer said the rankings were accurate as of November, 2002, but could be re-evaluated, especially if events in the Middle East warrant.

Ranked on public safety alone, Canada's cities are the safest in North America, the study says, "due to strict law enforcement and low crime rates."

All five cities tied for 25th in the world on this measure.

In the U.S., Honolulu, Houston and San Francisco were the safest, tying for 40th place worldwide. Washington, D.C., was North America's most dangerous city, ranking 107th.

Luxembourg was the safest city in the world; Bangui, in the Central African Republic, was deemed the most dangerous.

this is an extract from last weeks daily star.....

LIFE`S A BRIT BETTER HERE

YOU may not believe it, but we Brits enjoy a far better life than Germans, Italians and Spaniards.
We`re worse off than those in Iceland, Belgium and Australia - and Norway is the No1 place to live, according to a new survey of wealth and health.
New book The Pocket World In Figures ranks nations according to everything from how much people drink to how many cars they drive. It puts Britain in 11th place, alongside the French and Swiss.
We have more money to spend than the French, but less than the Irish. We also have the 5th highest marriage rate in the world and the 10th highest divorce rate.
When it comes to beer, we Brits are being drunk under the table by our rivals, trailing in at 23rd in the world. The boozy Czechs are rated top.

It would interesting to see what they used to measure QOL. Each of us wants something different. The survey is only relevant to those whose aspirations match the measured items.

Found the following blurb on the City survey mentioned above:

Mercer’s study is based on detailed assessments and evaluations of 39 key quality of life determinants, grouped in the following categories:

Political and social environment (political stability, crime, law enforcement, etc)
Economic environment (currency exchange regulations, banking services, etc)
Socio-cultural environment (censorship, limitations on personal freedom, etc)
Medical and health considerations (medical supplies and services, infectious diseases, sewage, waste disposal, air pollution, etc)
Schools and education (standard and availability of schools, etc)
Public services and transportation (electricity, water, public transport, traffic congestion, etc)
Recreation (restaurants, theatres, cinemas, sports and leisure, etc)
Consumer goods (availability of food/daily consumption items, cars, etc)
Housing (housing, household appliances, furniture, maintenance services, etc)
Natural environment (climate, record of natural disasters)

I was right about Auckland coming 5th then! And Wellington came 15th, slightly better than I remembered. My home city came 55th (Birmingham) which I thought was quite good until I noticed we were beaten by 2 places by LA. No way, I demand a re-count! Overall, UK cities didn't fair that bad but no comparison to NZ and Oz which I think is the main point we are trying to make here.

After watching a recent programme on t.v, I believed that Melbourne had been voted the best city, here's why:

melbourne the best city
Face it- Melbourne's perfect

October 04 2002

Melbourne has been declared the near-perfect town after being rated the best city in the world to call home.

In a survey of 130 cities, the Economist Intelligence Unit rated Melbourne and Vancouver in Canada as the best cities in the world in which to live, with Perth ranked third and Sydney, Brisbane and Adelaide tied in eighth place.

Papua New Guinea's capital Port Moresby was rated the worst.

The London-based EIU assessed the level of hardship for expatriates in the 130 cities, focussing on 12 factors including housing, education, recreational activities and climate.

Not surprisingly, Melbourne's weather prevented it earning a perfect score of zero, with the Victorian capital and Vancouver scoring one point, Perth two and Sydney, Adelaide and Brisbane all on four.

Sydneysiders won't agree, but Melbourne's weather, based on humidity rather than rain and temperature, was adjudged better.

And while Sydney received a near-perfect score in all categories, its high level of violent crime, on a par with New York and London, cost it points.

"Really we found very little wrong with Melbourne, it's just about the perfect city," said Bill Ridgers, editor of the EIU's Cost of Living survey.

"It got a perfect score in every single category we looked at, apart from slight faults in its humidity and the availability of recreational activities, but that's really splitting hairs."

Cities were rated one to five in the 12 categories, with one at 0 per cent meaning there was no hardship and five, at 100 per cent, indicating extreme hardship.

Sydney earned a two for violent crime, the same as New York and London, while Port Moresby scored five.

Melbourne received 1.1 for recreational activities, falling down on the availability of concerts and theatre, while Sydney earned one, but Perth received the lowest score of the five Australian cities surveyed.

The survey was split into three categories with the health and safety section rating the threat of violent crime, the threat posed by terrorism or armed conflict and a health and disease assessment.

Culture and environment looked at the availability of nightclubs, restaurants, sporting events, sporting facilities, theatres, cinemas and concerts, as well as studying climate, levels of corruption and the availability of consumer goods and services.

The infrastructure section ranked transport, housing, education and utilities.

Ridgers said although the survey was based on expats' experiences, the factors were broad enough to apply to locals as well.

London was joint 44th on 13 points along with Hong Kong, Lisbon, Madrid and San Francisco, while New York was 52nd on 16, equal with Dublin.

Canada performed strongly with Toronto equal fourth with Vienna, Geneva and Zurich, while Montreal joined Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, Copenhagen, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt and Oslo in eighth and Calgary was ranked 16th.

New Zealand cities Auckland and Wellington were both ranked 24th.

Different studies, different results.

The ones that rate 'cultural life' highly (theatre) tend to have NZ quite a way down whereas it's high up on those that weight the natural environment highly.

Same with Sydney and Melbourne. Sydney wins out if economic activity is weighted highly, Melbourne wins out if low crime is a big factor.

Oz and NZ still keep way up there in the rankings and Britain's a long way down.
