Why can't the UK Government start a policy of immigration along Aus/ NZ lines? Ie Skilled/ Family/ Humanitarian, with quotas and points?

1) The human rights protestors would be up in arms
2) It would take a degree of organisation that the current govnt could not cope with
3) If they did do it then they would actually have to tell us how many people had been let in and there would be a riot.
4) And lastly it wouldn't make a blind bit of difference to the the illeagle entry figures as those that couldn't get in that way would come in another way.

Personally, I don't think we should be considering any of the poll options until we have got our own house in order first. Please, don't get me started!

AFTER 17 unsolved gangland murders in five years, there is no reason to disagree with the traumatised Chadstone store owner whose shop was hit by a bullet in the latest killing.
Victorians have reason to demand an all-out effort to end the slaughter. We cannot allow Melbourne's streets to be taken over by criminals.
In Monday's execution, gunmen shot dead small-time crook Willy Thompson in his $80,000 sports car. Thompson had a record of drug offences and may have been connected with the Coburg slaying of career criminal Nikolai Radev.
At Essendon only a month ago criminal Jason Moran, himself a suspected killer, was shot dead with an associate in front of Moran's horrified children, who will bear the mental scars for life.
Each time there is a street execution the public is at risk.
But the real problem is the undercurrent of profitable criminality – including drug running and official corruption – of which the killings are only a symptom.

The Australian government said it was investigating banned Jemaah Islamiah's financial links to Australia and warned anyone connected to the Southeast Asian Islamic group they were placing themselves "at risk".
The government also revealed that alleged Jemaah Islamiah leader, Abu Bakar Bashir, had visited Australia at least 11 times with the aim of establishing the organisation's "influence".
Heavily armed Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) agents and federal police have raided several homes across the country belonging mainly to people originally from Indonesia since the government banned Jemaah Islamiah a week ago.
Many of the Muslims targeted in Sydney, Perth and Melbourne either attended lectures by Bashir, now detained in Indonesia, during several visits the 64-year-old Muslim cleric paid to Australia up to 1998 or drove him around.
Attorney General Daryl Williams told local television Bashir had come to Australia at least 11 times.
Ellison said anyone in Australia who willingly associated with the group "is placing themselves at risk".
The authorities have declined to reveal exactly why certain families and people have been questioned and their homes searched, and the targets have all denied any connection with Jemaah Islamiah beyond attending sermons by Bashir.
Boxes of computers, mobile phones and documents have been confiscated but there do not appear to have been any arrests.
Muslim leaders warn that relations between the European mainstream and Australia's 500,000 Muslims, already strained since September 11, 2001, could be irreparably hurt by the raids.
