Re: From UK to Brisbane..
If you're in Toowong though I'd say train might be a better option than the bus. Trains run on time and dont suffer traffic problems (although to be fair the number of busses going through Toowong probably means you dont give a toss about timetables!). ultimately it'd depend on where in Toowong you live and where in the CBD you work. If the bus stop is right outside your office then do it.... its going to be easier than doing the 'city shuffle' to central station. [On a related note - I'm SOOOO glad I dont work in the CBD any more! ]

Definitely support the page what JAJ suggests, so much there that I wish I had known about or thought of when I was offered a global position.
It is more suited to a high end position but there are still some aspects that a mid level employee can think about and ask for. They can only say no...right?

If it's going to be something on purely "local contract" terms, they ought to be willing to wait for a permanent visa to be granted.
A lot of people don't understand just how vulnerable you are on a temporary visa in a foreign country. Especially if your employer is not providing appropriate financial and other guarantees.

I used to ride it everyday and it was well used by bike riders, joggers and walkers all year round. If walking in summer you would definitely need access to showers at work which quite a few now have. A lot of people walk to work from the inner city suburbs and it is very doable.

I'm from Leeds Northern England so yeah the money goes a bit further than London though not as much as you might think.
Thanks for the replies some great info here and very helpful. Basically I have a meeting to discuss the details tomorrow and would rather be armed with the facts.
Though they are helping me fulfill my dream of moving to Australia they are getting a great deal out of me moving also and I want to make sure I get a decent pay off without seeming greedy. The last thing I want is to move there and effectively not have enough money to live on long term, they are asking for a 2 year lock in so I won't leave which I'm fine with but not if they aren't willing to pay me enough to live on.
I am aware that the last people who did a similar job were on $60k but I will be providing much more than they did in terms of experience, training of new staff and getting them out of shit creek on short notice so really hoping for a good bump.

No doubt someone will disagree with me but.......
I would rule out Fig Tree Pocket, Chapel Hill and Kenmore if commute to CBD is important. Western Motorway is basically a queue every morning the whole way in, I always laugh when I drive by the "Rocket" bus sitting stationary

I never go on the Western Freeway anymore, especially with the new tunnel works. It takes ages.

That sounds ok...have you heard from the locals whether Moggil Rd has improved in recent times as we have heard a lot of complaints on here over the last few years?

When looking for somewhere to live, look for somewhere within easy walking distance of a train station. The train service is pretty good and reasonably reliable.
South has a dedicated busway, so buses on the routes that use it are fairly reliable. A new northern busway is currently being built but isn't operating yet.
Parking in the CBD is very expensive, so I wouldn't consider driving in unless my employer provided a parking slot for me.
Toowong to the CBD is a 4-5km walk or cycle ride, and in Jan-Feb-Mar when the humidity hits 99% it is not something to do unless you can shower and change when you get to work!

Re: From UK to Brisbane..
Looks like they are going to offer me somewhere around $70k on a 457 visa they also said I would be offered LAFHA. Does this sound at all feasable? They also said super would come out of the $70k
My own investigations into 457 and LAFHA suggest that after the portion of salary put aside for LAFHA the minimum salary would have to be $61k meaning a LAFHA portion of less than $9k which doesnt sound great at all. Oh I am an IT professional btw
Any advice?

Re: From UK to Brisbane..
I've just been offered sponsorship in Milton, Brisbane so I have just been going through the whole salary/LAFHA/tax thing.
Where do you get the $61k from? I believe to qualify for LAFHA you must have a minimum GROSS salary after Super of $47,000 and of course be a temporary resident (457).

Secondly, any LAFHA is good and as long as you are above the MSL then surely you can see that it is a bonus? It is 9k tax free....enjoy it!

Re: From UK to Brisbane..
Thanks Chris. You prompted me to go check my figures again with the ABS as it has been a while. For the whole of Australia full/time male total earning is $75,410.40.
Specifically Qld, for the OP, comes in at a tad more than average at $75,732.8
WA comes in at a whopping $88,374
Followed by ACT at $83,574.4.
Note these are total earnings (including any overtime pay/bonuses) for men working full time which indicates for the OP the average package men working full/time are earning (excluding super)...it is $71,801.6 australia wide if you remove the overtime/bonuses.
The average for men and womens ordinary full/time earnings is $67,147 (excluding overtime/bonuses) Chris so maybe you are thinking about that.
