UK Birth Certificate
Right, does anybody out there know what the GRO Index Ref on a UK birth certifcate is supposed to look like, and where it is on the cert? I've got an abbreviated birth certs (parents lost the original - charming) and I need to get a full one for residency application.
My abbreviated version as 2 reference numbers on it:
'GG 338264' and at the bottom, under the date is a reference: 'IKCNJ 215'. Are either of these the GRO ref?
I know it's a bit of-topic but I'm having trouble contacting the GRO and thought I'd pick the old collective brain.

Not sure which is the reference number you need, but there are plenty of ways to get a full birth certificate issued without the ref no.
Here's a link to the General Register Office online, where you can order copies of your birth certificate. You can order online or by phone or by post.

If you do this by post and send a cheque the charge is £11.50 for the standard service or £27.50 if you want the fast service, where they dispatch the next working day. Ordering online is a bit cheaper I think. Full details of the fees are on the website above.

We just went to our local registry office and went into see the superintendant registrar and filled a form out with parents names etc and paid and they printed us one and posted it to us within 2 days simple as that !
Just looked at mine and i cant see a GRO number...could it be the NHS number they want??

Thanks guys for your posts...BUT...I know how to get hold the certificate, and I know it's really easy. It's just that if you can provide the GRO index ref it costs £7 rather than £11.50...and that £4.50 makes all the difference to those of us saving for the big move.
As I have the abbreviated version of my birth cert, it's immensely frustrating that I can't find out which of the flippin' numbers on it is the GRO ref! Even the GRO won't tell me - they just keep sending me emails telling me how to apply.

4. I have my copy and can't see any reference number like that one stated above! I have 4 letters and 6 numbers printed in the top right hand corner.

1 & 2. It's a number that I have yet to find that means you can get a copy of your certificate for £7 rather than £11.50. Yes, the whole quibble is over £4.50. I have Scottish blood.
3. Yes, you only need a certified copy.
4. You don't need to know your GRO if you already have your certificate.
5. DOn't be confused! All is well. You have all you need. Forget you ever read this post. Be calm.
