Re: Transfering to Oz Army as a Metalsmith
Hi I was just enquiring about this on the immi forum - should have checked in here first! We have citizenship but our son stopped in old blighty as he was enjoying the soldiers life. However after 10 years (he joined at 16) and several tours in some hot places in the world he now wants to come over and join us. However not sure if as an independent 26 yo he would be able to do anything, we can just do the digging whilst he does hos latest tour and see what we can find

If he's trying for a transfer to the Australian Army unless he's a Sergeant or above they will not touch him sadly and only then if its in a role where there is a personnel shortage thats if or when they lift the suspension of international transfers. However the operational experience that he has gained would be useful especially in the security industry over here as the Aussie Army has not had the same amount or variety of deployments as has the British (not saying the Australian Army isnt capable!). So as long as he dose the relevent security/close protection courses in Oz (you need a ticket for everything down here!) he would be very employable. Not to sure about what his Visa entitlement would be I'm afraid, anyway good luck! |
Re: Transfering to Oz Army as a Metalsmith
Thanks for that exsquaddie - must admit had'nt thought about security. It was suggested that he could try a working holiday visa and see what he could find out about different jobs etc whilst here. I think he may look at other civil jobs such as the police. So things may be possible - if he doesn't spend all the money he earns on this tour on wine, women and fun when he gets back, we may get him here for a visit at Christmas....now how many shopping days are there?:D

After 12 years and 8 tours I'd had enough. It was getting married that certainly changed my priorities! I married an Australian girl in 06 and got out in 08 its a long story so wont bore you! But since leaving have now ended up at the University of Queensland studying to become a teacher not 2 bad for an ex Infantry Corporal!

Re: Transfering to Oz Army as a Metalsmith
Thanks everyone for all the relevant info etc.
My last tour in stan I worked with some ozzy metalsmith's (boilermaker/welders) and even though I haven't got the stripes I know that they were in short supply as such. Will just have to have a go and see how I do then won't I?. Regards Marc:) |
