does that get sent in the post with the application in the form of a cheque/bankersdraft or is it done electronically from bank to bank?
If it's from bank to bank should I do it a couple of weeks earlier than posting the application?

Most pay by EFT or bank transfer, you can NOT pay by Visa, if you pay by bank transfer make 100% sure that you tick the box accepting ALL charges, or the application fee may fall short of a few dollars and even a couple of $ short will delay the process,

If you do the 'International Money Order' from your bank it is drawn against an Australian bank and the charges are calculated there and then so no more costs will be incurred and the TRA etc will get their full payment as it should be.
