I dont like either side so who am I supposed to vote for, in england I just wouldnt bother but here it is compulsory to vote, but they are all rubbish talking slimy buggers who will say anything to get in.

I dislike being forced to vote between idiot A or idiot B.

They need a monstor raving looney party, so I can vote for them.

Maybe tonight's Great Debate will kick-start your interest?

Or maybe like me you'll be watching Top Gear on Go!

In fact under Howard, every year the numbers were increased. Same with health budget spending. Howard stopped the boats (which stops children drowning at sea) Once the decision was made to have offshore processing and to stop PR visas (which entitles refugees to welfare, medicare and subsidised housing for life) the boats stopped coming, and then kicked off once the ALp softened the laws. Have a look at this graph:

There was a problem. Liberals worked out how to fix it. They put the plan into action, and it worked.
Of course they were not hard right in the traditional full spectrum available but they certainly were within the acceptable limits of the liberal party in a parliamentary democracy. The right wing of the liberals has again taken over under Abbott.

The graph doesn't match the number of immigrants held in detention each year. Could that be because it just stopped counting them once they were offshore....but then let them in anyway. The idea that the motivation was to stop children dying at sea is the biggest load of tosh imaginable.

That may be some consolation but look what they did in the UK. They may be out of power for a decade but the country will never recover, it is almost bankrupt, Brussels now makes the laws and they are fighting an illegal war no-one except their old lying PM wanted. If the Greens get the balance of power it could be even worse.

From the andrew bolt link above:

The Refugee Council of Australia says....

“In 2009, Australia received 6170 asylum applications, just 1.6% of the 377,160 applications received across 44 industrialised nations,"… “Of the 44 nations, Australia was ranked 16th overall and was 21st on a per capita basis.

“The industrialised countries with the largest number of asylum applications in 2009 were the United States (49,020), France (41,980), Canada (33,250), United Kingdom (29,840), Germany (27,650) and Sweden (24,190).

“Afghanistan was the single largest source country of people making asylum applications in industrialised countries. The 940 applications lodged in Australia by Afghans made up only 3.5% of the international total of 26,803. Afghans were four times more likely to lodge an application in Norway than in Australia.

Figures drawn from “Asylum Levels in Industrialized Countries 2009”, UNHCR

Countries of Origin of people Seeking Asylum in Australia in 2009
1. China 1,186
2. Afghanistan 940
3. Sri Lanka 553
4. Zimbabwe 344
5. Iran 303
6. Iraq 288
7. Pakistan 256

Many UN recognised refugees are also in favour of sending boat people back, so that the other UN recognised refugees are not held back in the queue.

It actually makes no difference to Australians, as we end up taking the same number, of about 13,000, whether they are boat people or via the correct channels.

Many people dislike the fact that the boat people are effectively jumping the queue.

Look at the two period of extremes:

1998-99 and 1999-2000 Before Pacific Solution
8,212 boat people arrived
15,187 refugee and SH Visa's were issued
23,399 Total + a few other types

2002-03 and 2003-04 During Pacific Solution
82 boat people arrived
24,087 refugee and SH Visa's were issued
24,169 Total + a few other types

Result, the more boat people that arrived, the less visas were issued to those in the UN refugee system.

But in total, basically the same number.

The numbers that related to boat people arrivals were:

2000–01 4,137
2001–02 3,039
2002–03 -

2007–08 25
2008–09 1,033
2009–10 (to 19th May 2010) 4,916

Many of the others would be normal visa overstayers etc. These may only be in detention for a few days before the next plane to return them.

immigration goes pear shape, overseas students will be flocking to america or other countries due to the cuts on permanent residency or visas.

although the argument may suffice to weed out dodgy applicants, first impressions do matter.

But does that just count the ones who made it inside Australia's immigration borders that were deliberately shrunken through the pacific solution? Does it ignore the ones that were turned back and forced to small countries who we bribed to put them into camps?

This talks about some of the points you have raised.
