Tomorrows State Budget in Victoria 4th May 2005
The State Budget in Victoria, due tomorrow 4th May, is expected to have the following:
· Allocate an extra $151 million over four years to independent and Catholic schools, with most of the money going to schools in poorer areas.
· Extend the popular $5000 first-home buyers bonus, which had been due to expire on June 30.
· Provide a substantial boost to funding for public hospital emergency departments, after more than 5000 people spent more than 24 hours waiting in emergency departments last financial year.
· Increase education spending by about $500 million over four years to build 16 new schools.
· Direct all future revenue from speed camera fines to new roads and road maintenance.
· Give a licence-fee discount to drivers with a clear record over three years.
· Allocate an extra $660 million over four years to public transport and upgrading roads.
· Spend a further $227 million over four years on the state's water conservation strategy.
· Reaffirm a commitment to keep water services in public ownership.
· Provide an extra $25 million to boost the Snowy River's flow.
· Direct extra money to the Victoria Police, enabling 54 new police stations and 12 new mobile stations to be built over the next four years.
