Time scales on emigrating dog
Can anybody help - we have finally sold the house and are looking to emigrate in May. We are wanting to take our dog with us and was wondering how long it takes to get injections, etc done. I was reading that we should start 180 days before you go with the rabies injection. Have I read this right? If that is the case we won't be able to go until September. Please can you give me the time scales it has took you. Any advice much appreciated.

You need to have the rabies injection 180 days before your dog arrives in Oz which includes the time spent in quarantine i.e. 150 days including the minimum 30 days that your dog has to stay in quarantine. You can of course travel earlier but then the dog would have to spend longer in quarantine.

Hi
If you exporting your dog from the UK, you do not need a rabies vaccination. It is only if you are exporting from a Category 4 or 5 country that you need to do it. UK is Category 2.
Check here for much more detailed info on each step of the process:
http://www.daff.gov.au/aqis/cat-dogs/countries/cat2
http://www.daff.gov.au/__data/assets...on_Package.pdf
Your dog will need:
- Microchip
- Permit to Import
- Quarantine station booking, and flight booking
- Vaccinations for distemper, infective hapatitis, canine parvovirus, para influenza and kennel cough.
- MUST NOT be vaccinated against Leptospirosis
- Blood tests for brucella, ehrlichia, leptospira and leishmaniosis
- Treatment for external parasites
- Veterinary Certificate A and B
So lots to do!!
We are still in the planning stages, so I am sure some of those who have already done it, will be able to give better advice.
I am sure you already know but there are plenty of companies who specialise in transporting pets, do a search on here and you'll find lots of info.
Good luck

I would say start the process at least 5 months ahead due to quarantine waiting times. Start by micro-chipping your dog. Then contact a reputable transport company like Airpets (Heathrow). They will do the bulk of what is needed including applying for import permits, booking flights/quarantine & building the crate & their vet completes vet certificates A & B just before the dog flies (after you have dropped them off).
They will also guide you thru the other bits i.e. the blood tests (make sure you use a government approved vet who knows what he is doing-preferably someone who has done it before).
No rabies jab unless your dog has been somewhere exotic recently!
Good luck

ps you might be able to get there in 3 months if the quarantine station you are looking at has space. Try contacting them directly now to enquire-they will be able to give you an idea of current waiting times

Re: Time scales on emigrating dog
due to the lepto they normally say don't vaccinate within 6 months before travel as the blood result will be high and they won't allow to travel, just because they want to be sure that your dog is lepto free. Lepto is the same as vials disease in humans. We can vaccinate seperate normally a vaccination your dog will have in the UK is distemper, hep, parvo, lepo and parinfluenza. when did you have the lepto jabs and it may be wise to speak to your vets as you would be suprised how many animals we export and know what needs to be done. As someone has already said you don't need rabies to go to oz, but you will need it to come back to the uk. With rabies it is injection and 30 days later a blood test. After the blood test are back you can go but the dog is not allowed back to the uk for 6 months. but after 6 months you can come and go and some brands of vacines you only need to booster jab every 3 years. hope thsi helps

I recommend you ask as "expert" from an export company who will be able to tell you EXACTLY what the timescales are.
But - you DON'T need Rabies shots UNLESS you will be returning the dog to the UK. It's not a requirement for entry to Australia, it is a requirement for entry into the United Kingdom. We did NOT vacinate for rabies.
When dogs have their annual boosters - you must leave lepto off the injection list. If the dog has had vaccine within 6 months then it is likely to fail the blood tests and as they are done as one of the last things in the two weeks before you go - you don't want the dog to fail when its all hanging on those blood tests!

We flew Charlie the 13 year old Shih tzu out to Sydney. He flew the day before us - with British Airways (poor little sod) and we flew the following day with Singapore. We gave them toys, blanket and his collar. ALL of those items were removed at Sydney by quarantine and disposed of. Best advice - sneak dog toys into your luggage (washed) plus a fav blanket it you want to and take them with your luggage. When you visit quarantine - say they're NEW and can the pet have them. You can take new toys up when you visit.
Our dog lost 2 kilos (from 7k to 5k) in the 30 days he was in there and he was VERY distressed but then he's OLD and on meds. BUT - they did their best and he made it OK and now enjoys daily walks on the beach and we would not have come without him.
Be warned though - we reckon the overall cost to ship our SMALL dog was £2500 all in when accounting for extra injections, kennel cough, blood tests etc. Airpets alone cost £1300. Shipping costs increase with the size of the pet and the number of pets. I mean people ship horses and all sorts!!!!
AIRPETS - Not the cheapest but HIGHLY recommended.

I won't teach you to suck eggs 'cause you've just heard everything that you needed to know (no rabies required, hope you've avoided lepto, get booked in early).
All I'd say is do a search of the forums and look at others beyond 'Airpets'......many have had great experiences with them (others haven't)...and many have had great experiences with other carriers.
Whoever you choose, they'll hold your hand and make things incredibly easy.
The guys we flew with were excellent and the information they sent to us - which we had to take the the local Vets - left our vet very impressed with the amount of thought/preparation.
Get on the phone, ask the questions, get the quotes. It can happen remarkably quickly.
Good Luck

Hi Rubypearl,
Who did / are you using ?
I have had quotes from airpets and another firm (can't remember the name now ), coming up around £2200.00-£2500.00 at the minute for my chocolate lab.
I have justs sent off for another quote with a company called Parair.
Any recommendations would be helpful !!!
Donna.

Re: Time scales on emigrating dog
We used Airpets for our chocolate Lab and very happy with the whole deal. The worst part was dropping him off at the airport. The wife couldn't do it so down to me. But the reception was great. You just get the feeling that the handler who is looking after your dog really does care about him. That's probably the case with other companies, but just our experience.

Hi, we have 4 to take all Staffords - quoted £4900 for all of them that's with Overhill. They have a website. They are a long way from us but two friends have used them and sing their praises, I really liked them when I spoke to them.
