Tile suppliers pls
Hi all,
Boring question i know, but can anyone point us in the right direction for tile shops. We need to price up large floor tiles and what a fitter would charge over here in Brisbane. Done Beaumont etc but surely there are some cheaper places hidden away?
Thanks for any help!

Tile retailers will sell you tiles a lot cheaper if you haggle. A lot have ranges that are around the $26-30 per m2 these can often be bought for as little as $17per m2. Also the only difference between the $40 bucks a metre and the $26 is that quite often the dearer tile is a latest design. Now when your house is more than a couple of years old will anyone be able to look back and say hey these tiles are 2005 not 2006.
Many of the cheaper retailers are actually subsidiaries of the main players selling tiles that are a commercial grade tile as opposed to a domestic.
Classic example one customer of ours bought tiles from X supplier and paid $14 bucks a m2 another bought the same pattern and size from Y supplier and paid $26 per m2 The first tiles were awful to lay as they varied in size by up to 3mm the second were as close to perfect as we've seen here. You have to ask what the quality is as positioning in the kiln affects tile sizes. Try to buy A or B grade as these have the least amount of variation. Steer clear of Rectified Porcelain unless your floors are perfectly level as they have no bevelling on their edge and show up any slight hollow or hump in the floor. They also need sealing at an extra cost of $15+ bucks a m2.
Prices for tiling in Brisbane I've no idea what the going rate is but if it's anything like the sunshine coast it will be around the $40 Per m2 including GST Most tilers seem to be charging around that price in our area for basic laying including glue and grout. Insist on the use of a good quality rubber modified glue as well as silicon expansion joints as per Aust. standards. Oh and if they think you'll pay more than the going rate, most tradies will happily charge you extra just for being the new Poms in town.
Good luck
