In the 90,s i would drive into Edinburgh Air base ,wave to the guard and drive through .
2006 takes me 40 minutes of p/work plus ,to find the client who must come to the Main gate sign me in and accompany me the entire time i am on the base .
The huge sign over the gate say,s it all "The Biggest threat to Australia ,is to believe their is no threat"......we are aware ............ mm

[QUOTE=I also feel that being a british born hindu who is totally integrated in bristish life and totally opposed to these kinds of terrorist attacks I may also be suspected because people cant tell the difference between muslims, hindus and shiks
All in all I feel Australia is safer but we should not get complacent as an attack could happen anywhere.[/QUOTE]
1) I agree; remember how many non Christian places of worship were vandalised after 9/11. The locals around here even had a go at the kebab shops !
2) Australia is not top of the terrorists list, but neverthless is seen as an easier and softer option because of this.
Terrorists integrate into society for years. He or she could be your friendly postie, student or helpful neighbour. Okay paranoid maybe but they are around! They do prefer to disrupt and get media coverage, having said that the game plan seems to have changed somewhat over the last few years.

I definately feel that the day to day security is a lot more relaxed here in Oz. I get the train to work in the mornings and I rarely see any security checks/guys or many cctv cameras, maybe its all done in a secret undercover way?
I was talking to a guy at work, he's an Aussie and we were talking about the Commonwealth Games in Melly earlier this year. He was there and was talking about all the security they had at the event, and in his opinion it was totally over the top as Australia would never have a terrorist attack!
This surely is a narrow minded opion, and I warned him that he should never say never. Any country that has ties to the US and has troops based in the Middle East/Afghanistan has the potential to be the next target.

I took "the same" option but I think it tips slightly towards the UK.
I don't think CCTV makes much of a difference before the event (as 7/7 showed) but does make a difference afterwards.
I think the biggest threat is home-grown radicals and I think the UK has more of these (although it only takes 1 to make an impact).
I think Aus did a good job of security at the Melbourne Games (particularly as Melbourne had been named as a target about 6 months earlier). One of the problems with this is measuring your success.
I suspect that the intelligence agencies of the UK and Aus work together very closely - like the UK SAS and Aus SAS.

I was incredibly impressed with the CCTV, on my last trip to the UK which was around 7/7 last year. I think the fact that it was so effectively used after the event last year, is in itself a deterrent, for things like staking out etc etc.
I used to be so against CCTV and the ramifications of it, because I felt it would be used against certain targeted individuals for the powers that be whims. Big brother etc. Now I just wish we had the coverage here that the UK has.
Your last comment Martin, really hit home, The UK Sas and The Aus SAS are in friendly competition with each other, to set the highest standards that armed forces can meet. There are not many better units around the world apparently. Its been a rumour here for years, that in the Iraq war it was the Aussie SaS that were knocking out the ground to air missile batteries on the ground deep in Iraq.
Whatever the situation, It's obvious that Australia as a nation is in it up to its neck just as deeply as the UK and the US.

Re: Threats from Terrorists.... Is Australia safer ?
The thought of flying to Australia with no hand luggage for 11 year old and 5 year old fills me with dread. :scared: Flying on 18th September to Melbourne, got flight bags sorted, ie colouring books etc and small toys for youngest to play with. Nintendo for eldest and mp3 player. Fully appreciate the reasons for banning electrical equipment can't see point of books etc but will just have to go along with it. Might just give the kids some drugs before we fly!!!!!! Trying to stay up beat for kids sake but still extremely concerned!
Anyone else flying to Melbourne 18th September, leaving Glasgow 9am (hopefully) leaving Heathrow at around 12 noon (Singapore Airlines)?

One of the brothers was pictured next to the Muslim depicting a suicide bomber, in recent London protests, and they also couldn't/wouldn't explain why £35,000 in cash was found in one of their bedrooms during the raid.
If the child porn allegations are true, I think all of this amounts to a couple of assets to British society.
How many paedophiles in UK have you read about are non-white? The answer is none. So why should anyone believe that this bangladeshi guy is involved in child stuff ?
You may as well say - how many black men have won Wimbledon; only Arthur Ash. So why should anyone believe that his opponents didn't throw their games that year.
Ever thought the reason more white paedophiles are exposed is probably because there are more whites in the country?

TC
How many people here I wonder know that the Man Utd Bomb scare was actually nothing at all.
My point is, how much of this is media frenzy and/or caused by media frenzy?

We may have to agree to disagree on this one but personally I don't put much faith in CCTV particularly as being identified after the fact is not much of a concern to a suicide bomber.

so why bother calling terrorist SUSPECTS Muslim or of Pakistani origin?
Isn't it better just to call them British and crazy and leave it at that.
Playing up to their claims that they are doing it in the name of god is in a way empowering them.
Let's take their religious excuse away from them.
