I couldnt understand half of what you said, but I think the general idea was you carnt get something on medicare you used to get on the nhs?, well the nhs has changed a lot recently, I went in yesterday and asked about 2 things that used to be done on the nhs and was told nope we dont do those anymore. The doc told me they have removed a lot of treatments and services in the last few years from the nhs

I would rather pay my own medical expenses than the contribute to everyone elses as well.

My Thyroid meds cost me approx $50 every 3 months, I bet the NHS cost me more than that.

Having had thyroid probs for 15 years, the standard of care I get here is a million times better too - and that's all free. Including my specialist, who is just the best

There's good and bad in all Paul, none of it is perfect. The only thing that really matters in the end is that your family are happy, you have food on the table and a roof over your head. All the rest is cosmetic and doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things

(and my bottle of wine went down well too )

Both of my medications are covered by Medicare. A 2-month script costs me $6.50.

No complaints here.

I am normally out of pocket about $1000 a year on PBS medicines for the family. Non PBS is another $1000. Most of it is for my two children. Do kids still get free prescriptions on the NHS?

All our prescriptions are free here in Scotland, and the parking at hospitals.

Ah, free parking at hospitals! I missed that so badly when I lived in the UK. Such a relief to come back home and find it's all still free.

Yep indeed! No such thing as free parking at hospitals where we lived in Surrey.

Some things are better, some are worse.

For me Australia was definitely less expensive for my health needs it costs me £165 here for a procedure that's not available on NHS, but is free in Australia, or $30 depending on where I have it done (Same Dr but different venue!)

In Australia, everyone pays for the Medicare system, it's just not separated out like National insurance in the UK, it's just part of your tax. In fact Government spending on health is around the same as the UK. However because there's a lot of private providers in Australia, providing services to medicare, I think that there is less value for money, because some procedures/services cost more, as they're provided by businesses, who need to make profits.

Despite all the moaning and all the changes that have been/ are being implemented in the UK NHS, it's still regarded as the best 'free at the point of delivery' health service in the world, providing health care for everyone from cradle to grave regardless of their ability to pay. Just as Bevan intended in 1947.

Have fairly frequent use of two general hospitals. One in NSW has free parking. The other in QLD is $1.60 p/h - however there is no hospital parking, it's all metered roadside so not the same thing. I think (fair while ago now) parking at the hospitals near my old home in the UK was all paid. Hey, maybe it depends on the hosptal/area and it's nothing to do with the country at all. Now there's a thought!
