"The WA government is so concerned about the burgeoning skills crisis it is taking a delegation to the United Kingdom and Ireland in a bid to poach workers."

Re: Thinking about Western Australia?
Anything outside of the mining industry or nursing I personaly would take the list with a pinch of salt.
Graduates are finding it more difficult to obtain a position at the moment and certain trades may well find difficulty in securing work.
Would be an expensive operation indeed to come out here without having some idea of what will be doing work wise.

How many points do I add for petty theft, an unpaid parking ticket and an ASBO? [/mandatory crime question relating to Australian immigration]

Good luck getting the mining staff. Not worth it for them. At least not proffessionals. I came here at the same time as 10 other geologists i know. There are 3 still here and all, including myself are planning on leaving. Sunshine isnt worth the cost. Africa pays twice the money and cost of living a fraction. Here you struggle to pay off a mortgage for 20 years. There i will re buy and pay it off in 4 years tops

We live in a 1st world democracy with high salaries and a welfare state, or course it's going to cost more to live here than in Africa. There is no comparison.
Not many AK47s on the streets of Perth either.

Speak for yourself. I'm doing very well here - as are all my colleagues.

Re: Thinking about Western Australia?
On the subject of jobs in mining, I'm hoping people don't mind if I hijack the thread a little.
I'm currently studying a RICS accredited Quantity Surveying course in the UK and have just finished my 2nd year and currently out on my placement year with a multi-national multi-sector PQS. Before starting the placement I did have some inkling as to what sectors I would like to work in post-graduation, these being oil/gas or mining.
Unfortunately the placement I am currently on has me dealing with typical construction projects right now, I did discuss with the interviewer prior to starting my hope to get some experience in their oil/gas department but I'm unsure if that is going to happen, it has gone quiet on that front.
I guess what I'm looking for is some advice from QSs (or others) working in mining or oil/gas as to how I can improve my chances of gaining employment in these sectors come graduation.
I was intending to try and find a placement in oil/gas or mining next summer for a month or two once I have finished my placement year. If anyone can recommend any specific companies that may be able to offer the sort of placement I would be looking for it would be much appreciated.

There's also the AK47s. I've seen first hand what an AK47 can do, all well and good if you have one too, but if you don't...............
I would not want to spend long spells working in remote Africa.

Good point. Malaria is endemic in nearly all countries in Africa apart from SA (where it is starting to spread again in remoter parts) and is not a joke, it's a very debilitating disease - ask Cheryl Cole. In my army days in Namibia/Angola, we were given anti-malaria medication and were forced to take it as the army took the threat of malaria very seriously. All well and good, but the side-affects are truly awful, I hated taking it.

at least in Africa your life will be interesting unlike being boring and pointless here in Perth.
If I had kids though I probably would say no.
